Overview

The Department of Agricultural Extension offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Agriculture programme with a focus on Agricultural Extension. The programme equips students with a solid foundation in agricultural and social sciences, emphasizing rural sociology, communication, gender and development, climate change, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods. Students gain the analytical and practical skills needed to promote inclusive and climate-resilient agricultural systems while empowering rural communities. The interdisciplinary approach ensures that graduates are prepared to respond to emerging challenges in agricultural development and global sustainability.


Aims & Objectives

The undergraduate programme in Agricultural Extension aims to train competent professionals who can bridge research, policy, and practice in agriculture and rural development. Its specific objectives are to:

  • Provide students with a sound understanding of agricultural extension theories, methods, and communication strategies.
  • Build students’ capacity to integrate gender, climate change, and entrepreneurship perspectives into agricultural and rural development initiatives.
  • Develop practical skills in participatory development, organizational leadership, and programme management.
  • Enhance awareness of the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable agricultural development.
  • Prepare graduates to contribute effectively to poverty reduction, food security, and livelihood improvement at local, national, and global levels.

Graduates of the Agricultural Extension programme are well-equipped for diverse and rewarding careers in the public and private sectors, as well as in development and research institutions. Employment opportunities exist in:

  • Government ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

Entry Requirements

Admission into the B.Sc. Agriculture (Agricultural Extension option) follows the general entry requirements of the University of Ghana. Applicants may qualify through the following routes:

  • WASSCE/SSSCE holders: Must have credits (A1–C6 / A–D) in six subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and three electives in science-related subjects (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or General Agriculture).
