Profile
Prof. Daniel B. Sarpong is an Associate Professor and former Dean, School of Agriculture, University of Ghana. He is a product of the University of Ghana, International University of Japan and Nagoya University, Japan. He is a Fellow of Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. He was the Chair/Head, Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, University of Ghana, a position he has held on three occasions between 2006 and 2017. He was from 2012-2014 the Vice Dean, School of Agriculture, under the then College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences (CACS), University of Ghana. He has also served on several University of Ghana Boards/Committees and was the Chairman, Ethics Committee for Basic and Applied Sciences (ECBAS) and the past Chairman, Junior, and Senior Staff Promotion and Appointments Committee of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS), University of Ghana. Daniel is a former member of the Steering Committee of the High-Level Panel of Experts (StC-HLPE) on Food Security and Nutrition, UN-FAO for the 2019-2021 session. He has been teaching and undertaking research and extension work at the University of Ghana since September 1998, when he was first appointed as a Lecturer. He teaches courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, Research Methodology and Statistics and Econometrics. He has over 100 published journal articles, technical publications, and other reports. Over the last two decades and a half, he has supervised several PhD, MPhil and Bachelor students for their theses and dissertations. He provides scientific analysis of socio-economics of agricultural households and their impacts on the macro-economy. He has led the Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness in providing several consultancy extension works to several governmental, non-governmental and international organizations which has helped to resource staff and students. The consultancies has helped to offer graduate students the critical field practical and generated data for graduate/undergraduate research work. He also led the Department in her review of the current undergraduate courses and led the introduction of two new PhD Programs, PhD Agribusiness and PhD Agricultural Administration, besides the re-branded PhD Agricultural Economics programme now called PhD in Applied Agricultural Economics and Policy. Prof Sarpong has also received several research grant support to train several PhD students, and currently manages an AGRA-funded PhD program (PhD in Applied Agricultural Economics and Policy) which aims at training 16 Francophone West African PhDs and 4 Anglophone West African PhDs. The first batch of 7 Francophone West Africa PhD students successfully defended their theses in December 2016. He is the principal investigator and has also collaborated with others on several baseline and other studies commissioned by CIDA/MoFA; JICA/MoFA; MoFA-RTIMP, ACDI/VOCA ADVANCE; Center for International Health, School of Public Health, Boston University/University of Ghana; FAO; DFID/ISSER/WB; World Bank; CAADP-NEPAD. He recently was with the Futures Agriculture Consortium (FAC) Climate Change that undertook the study on “Study on climate change and agricultural policy processes in Ghana” and the University of Georgia Global Peanut Product Processing and Marketing Team. He is currently part of an international research team on Indicators of Affordability of Nutritious Diets in Africa (IANDA) Project, based at Tufts University, USA. His current on-going research is on Cocoa for Future (Cocoa4Future): Sustainability of production systems and new dynamics in the cocoa sector.
