The macroeconomic theory I course, which is taught at the Department of Economics aims at providing a good understanding of the core theories and concepts in macroeconomics.

ECON 602 Microeconomic Thoery II

Credit Hours - 3

The microeconomic theory II is a second semester’s course which is the continuation of the first semester’s microeconomic theory I.

ECON 601 Microeconomic Theory I

Credit Hours - 3

The microeconomic theory I course which is taught at the Department of Economics aims at providing a good understanding of the core theories and concepts in microeconomics, ability to understand contemporary journal articles, a flair for economic reasoning, ability to engage in contemporary policy debates and the ability to apply the knowledge gained from the course the course to real world situation.

AGEC 618 Environmental Economics

Credit Hours - 3

The course discusses how economic activities impact the environment and how to design policies to respond to these impacts. In this course we develop and apply microeconomic tools for the analysis of environmental externalities.

AGEC 617 Resource Economics

Credit Hours - 3

The purpose of this course is to enhance the student’s ability to use economic theory to critically analyze natural resource issues and resource management policy. It is designed to prepare the student to articulate (in both oral and written form) key concepts that underlie the economics of natural resources.  The course introduces students to seminal literature and conventional economic frameworks.

AGEC 616 Production Economics

Credit Hours - 3

The production economics course presents the application of economic principles to the analysis of the agricultural production systems. The objective of the course is to enhance students’ knowledge of the theory of the firm as it relates to agricultural production.

AGEC 605 Agriculture and Economic Development

Credit Hours - 3

The purpose of this course is to deal with the central issues of the process of agricultural development in the general process of economic development; and to introduce the student to the main issues of development planning, from formulation through to implementation and evaluation.

AGEC 602 Econometrics

Credit Hours - 3

The objective of this course is to provide students with a good understanding of the econometric models widely used in empirical literature and the ability to evaluate studies and perform independent research using agricultural economic data.

AGEC 601 Advanced Mathematical Methods

Credit Hours - 3

The course aims at building the mathematical knowledge of students to equip them to meet the rigorous quantitative and econometric models that apply to economics, particularly agricultural economics. This course comprehensively captures the needed mathematical topics for sound understanding in economic modelling. This course seeks to provide mathematical methods for understanding the economic literature in developing appropriate economic models. 

AGEC 660 Thesis

Credit Hours - 30

The thesis writing forms an integral part of the programme. Students dedicate one academic year for thesis writing. It is an individual study culminating in a formal thesis. The thesis is undertaken under the supervision of two faculty members. The purpose of this work is to develop and underpin a personal understanding of the fundamentals required to solve a problem.

AGEC 620 SEMINAR II

Credit Hours - 3

This is the second part of a research seminar course intended to provide students planning a research career with the opportunity to develop the skill of critical reading and evaluation of research papers. The course is open to all students and is a required component of the MPhil. programme. The course will consist of timetabled sessions in which students will present their research findings emanating from their thesis.

UGBS 616 Human Resource Management

Credit Hours - 3

The objective of this course is to explain the nature, purpose and importance of the human resource management (HRM) paradigm and the core functions of HRM that need to be addressed contemporarily by organizations in order to achieve high organizational performance.

UGBS 603 Economics

Credit Hours - 3

The course aims to give students in business an appreciable capacity to understand the economic environment they operate in for appropriate decision-making in their daily operations. In this course, students will learn the application of basic principles of economics to decision making within households and businesses. This will help them to improve their decision-making processes and capture the relevant scenarios of inter-play of economic variables in a forward–looking or forecasting strategy.

AGEC 628 Agricultural Law

Credit Hours - 3

This course is about selected legal principles in law courses and financial law including Contract Law; Labour Law; Land Law, Tort law, Conveyancing, Commercial Law, Loan Negotiations, Loan Administration, Procurement of Agricultural Goods and Services, Disbursement of Loans, Crop and livestock insurance, and Environmental Law. The student in this class must be able to find and describe the relevant policies and laws that creates rights and duties in the regulation of agriculture and agribusiness in Ghana.

AGEC 625 Agro-Industrial Management

Credit Hours - 3

The objective is to equip students with skills that prepare students for research and future career. At the end of the course, students will be equipped with the problem-solving skills to be able to provide management level solutions to domestic agro-industrial problems. The course builds on basic concepts in economics and agribusiness and their applications as useful tools for decision-making and answering questions that agro-industrialist and/or agri-entrepreneurs encounter in everyday business life.

AGEC 624 Operations Research

Credit Hours - 3

The objective of the course is to introduce students to some of the important Operations Research techniques often used by decision makers in modern times in business and industry for determining optimal decisions and patterns of resource allocation.

AGEC 622 Project Analysis and Management

Credit Hours - 3

This course introduces students to advanced understanding of the concepts and analytical tools for analyzing and managing agricultural and related sector projects. The course objective is to equip candidates with some of the quantitative tools required to formulate suitable framework for optimal decision making in agribusiness planning, development and management.

AGEC 615 Agricultural Finance

Credit Hours - 3

The course objectives include to appraise students on the role of financial services in agricultural development; raise students’ awareness about the challenges of agricultural finance; acquaint students on the workings of financial markets and their implications on access to finance for the agricultural sector; and inform students about the innovations in the financial services for agriculture especially for financial inclusion of small farmers.

AGEC 613 Agricultural Trade

Credit Hours - 3

This course offers a holistic overview of the management of marketing within the agricultural value chain based on problem solving methods. It also acquaints students with the theory and practice of international trade; guides them to grasp trade policy options available generally and for developing countries in particular, e.g., Ghana; shows the determinants in the foreign exchange markets and trade; and then creates awareness of new developments in the world agricultural trade arena under the WTO.

AGEC 612 Farm Business Management

Credit Hours - 3

The course is designed to equip students with the tools and skills to support the management of farm businesses to be profitable and competitive in the global markets. This course, which is the second part of the farm business management, is also designed to introduce students to the principles of management and decision making that is applicable to farm businesses, and to develop skills in applying these principles to realistic management situations.

AGEC 604 Computer Applications

Credit Hours - 3

This course is designed to introduce students to the use of statistical software packages and provide the needed skills for effective data management, data manipulation and data analysis. This is in order to enhance students’ capacity in data analysis and interpretation of estimated parameters during their final thesis, project and other research works.

AGEC 603 Research Methodology and Statistics

Credit Hours - 3

This course provides students with a sound understanding of the principles of conducting scientific research. It also provides students with several methods of conducting research, including statistical sampling techniques and econometric methods.
