Vice-Chancellor’s Goodwill Message

Vice-Chancellor’s Goodwill Message

Hello everyone,

It is a pleasure to come your way once again with my goodwill message as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana. A new year is upon us, and we must be thankful to God for His mercies and grace which has sustained us throughout the year 2022, in spite of the difficult times we faced as a nation, an institution and as individuals.

The past year has been eventful, more so as the University started the celebration of its 75th anniversary. It's been 75 years of attracting significant funding to conduct ingenious research; 75 years of advancing the course of higher education in Ghana and beyond; 75 years of nurturing great minds, talents and results-oriented graduates who are breaking frontiers and making significant contributions to the development of our nation Ghana and the world at large.

Following the grand launch of the year-long celebration in August last year, a number of programmes marking the 75th Anniversary have been held including the Alumni Lecture, Tree Planting Exercise, and a Walk with UG Alumni and Friends. These have been exciting, but the best is yet to come, as the Planning Committee has outlined very exciting, fun and intellectually stimulating programmes to engage all stakeholders of the university community.

We have reason to celebrate this significant milestone in the life of the premier university in Ghana as we reflect on the progress we have made so far and devise strategies to effectively deliver on our mandate to create an enabling environment that makes University of Ghana increasingly relevant to national and global development.

At the University of Ghana, we are committed to knowledge generation that positively impacts lives. Together with my Management Team, we will continue to work to improve the fortunes of this University. I am happy to note that one of our flagship programmes, the Vice-Chancellor’s Programme to enhance the UG Student Experience (Digitalization Project), has started to see the light of day, with the commissioning of the K.A. Busia Lecture Hall and some lecture halls at the UG Business School, WACCI and WACCBIP among others. We were also able to provide our first batch of needy students with laptops. I entreat both internal and external stakeholders (individuals and institutions) to support this noble vision to give our cherished students an exciting and memorable learning experience.

My vision as Vice-Chancellor is to create a culture that promotes research, teaching and learning, administrative processes and extension activities driven by technology and anchored in humanism.

I entreat each of us to work conscientiously towards our common goal so that collectively, we can build an excellent academic environment befitting a world-class university for all stakeholders.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is a fact that our economy is not in good shape “we are in crisis” as alluded to by the His Excellency the President of the Republic and confirmed by the Honourable Minister of Finance, a few weeks ago. In spite of this, let us not be in despair, rather let’s approach 2023 with optimism and hope; remember, in the midst of adversity, lies opportunities. The new year holds a wide expanse of possibilities. As the government takes steps to bring the economy back on track, I urge us all to work individually and collectively in whichever capacity we can, to ensure that we build a resilient and robust economy.

Having resumed full scale operations following disruptions to our academic activities occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, let's continue to observe the necessary  preventive and precautionary protocols, and general hygenic practices, to safeguard ourselves and others as we are still living with the virus.

I want to thank each of you for your unflinching support and effort to the cause of the University of Ghana. I employ you to continue to discharge your responsibilities with excellence.

As I end my message, let me quote from our inspiring University Anthem and say, “May this great tower of learning, inspire both young and old as we proceed with unity to uphold the public cause”.

I extend warm wishes to our faculty, staff, students, alumni, affiliates, associates, and friends of the University.

I wish you a prosperous 2023, may you succeed in your personal and professional lives, as we collectively strive towards positioning UG as a global centre of excellence in higher education.

Afehyia pa!
