UG Celebrates 2023 Festive Season with Service of Nine Lessons, Carols, and Drama

The University of Ghana embraced the spirit of Christmas with its annual Service of Nine Lessons, Carols and Drama at the S.K. Aboah Recreational Quadrangle. Organised jointly by the Chaplaincy Board, the Public Affairs Directorate and the School of Performing Arts, the event brought together members of the University community and the University Basic School for an enchanting evening of traditional carols and insightful messages.

Themed, “A Jubilee of Carols Under the Stars: Celebrating 75 Years of Christmas Cheer,” the service kicked off with a warm welcome from the MC’s, Mrs. Mavis Osafo Adu, Assistant Registrar at the Public Affairs Directorate and Secretary to the Chaplaincy Board and Dr. Terry Bright Ofosu, from the Department of Dance Studies. The event aimed to foster unity and evoke the holiday spirit of joy and reflection.

The stage came alive with nine scriptural readings and Christmas carol renditions, guiding the audience through biblical passages narrating the story of Christ's birth.

Representatives from various groups, associations and bodies read the scriptural readings for the night. Miss Eva Beatrice Baidoo from the University Basic School led the first lesson, followed by Mr. Frank Tsikata, the SRC President, who presented the second lesson. Ms. Faustina A. Frimpong, GRASAG Vice President, delivered the third lesson, succeeded by Mr. Daniel Togblonu, a representative of the Junior Staff. Ms. Gloria Anaman, representing the Senior Staff, presented the fifth lesson and Mrs. Yvonne Lartey, a representative of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), read the sixth lesson.

Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison, Secretary the University Teachers Association Ghana (UTAG), UG Chapter, took the seventh lesson, followed by Mrs. Mavis Otu Ayeh, College Secretary of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences. The night's lessons concluded with the ninth lesson, read by Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Rev. Dr. Nicholas Israel Nii-Trebi of the UG Chaplaincy Board delivered the Christmas Message, emphasising Christ Jesus as the focal point of the Christmas story. He urged attendees not to lose sight of this essence, as it holds universal significance and influences believers' inclusion upon His return.

Drawing from the shepherds' proactive search for baby Jesus, Rev. Dr. Nii-Trebi encouraged everyone to approach the New Year with optimism, seeking opportunities to positively contribute to the University.

The jubilant event, featuring performances by the UG Jubilee Choir, University Basic School Choir, Noguchi Choir, Kwan Pa GH, Lordina the Soprano and Dr. Ok Kim Kyoung of the Department of Music, featured a captivating dramatisation of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem by students from the School of Performing Arts.

The evening, beginning with an opening prayer by Rev. Dr. Kwaku Boamah, Chaplain of Akuafo Hall, concluded with a closing prayer and benediction by Rev. Mrs. Gloria Obeng Benefo, a member of the UG Chaplaincy Board.
