UG Athletes and Sports Officials Present Recently Won Trophy And Medals to VC

The triumphant team of athletes who proudly represented the University of Ghana and secured victory at both the 2023 Rugby and Tennis Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Championship at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda and the West African Universities Games Championship held at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, Nigeria, paid a courtesy call on Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.

Led by Director of Sports Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu and coaches from the Sports Directorate, the athletes presented the Vice-Chancellor with seven (7) gold medals and the prestigious overall winners' trophy.

Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu thanked the Vice-Chancellor for her personal support and commitment to the Sports Directorate. He further extended heartfelt appreciation to Management and the entire UG community for the immense support towards the Directorate’s participation in international competitions.

Prof. Amfo congratulated the accomplished athletes and expressed gratitude for their hard work and success. ‘I heard the news almost instantly and I was overjoyed and still overjoyed. I would like to congratulate the Director of Sports, Coaches, administrative and other support staff and the students themselves. Congratulations on such a brilliant performance.”

With immense pride, she assured the team of the University’s enduring support in furthering the promotion of sports within UG.

‘I want you to know that management is very proud of your achievements which I know have not come easily. It demonstrates that at the University of Ghana, we are very rounded, it is not just about academic achievements but also sporting achievements and that makes us the University of Ghana that we are. You can be assured that we will continue to provide the needed support to ensure that this kind of standard is maintained and improved upon.”

She urged the sportsmen and women present to invest resources in fostering talents and maintain consistency in their pursuits.

University of Ghana claimed gold medals in the Men's Singles, Mixed Doubles, Men's Doubles, Men's Team, Women's Doubles and Women's Team events to mark a successful campaign at the 2023 Rugby and Tennis Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Championship.

In the same tournament, the team also clinched silver medals in the Women's Singles and Mixed Doubles events making it nine medals in total. The University of Ghana was represented by six student-athletes, one student leader and four officials.

The West African Universities Games Championship (WAUGC) held at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, Nigeria which witnessed fierce competition from 22 universities across the West African region, also saw the University of Ghana emerge as the overall winners, securing a remarkable tally of 10 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze medals.

Also present at the short presentation event were; Dr. Austin Wontepaga Luguterah, Head, Department of Physical Education and Sports and member of the UG Sports Management Committee; Dr. Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director of Public Affairs; Ms. Pascaline K. Songsore, Senior Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs Directorate; Augustine Amissare, Senior Assistant Registrar, Sports Directorate; student athletes, as well as the technical team members.
