Vice Chancellor signing the book of condolence

Professor Mumuni Dakubu was this morning laid to rest in Accra after a brief ceremony attended by officials of the University, colleagues, family members and friends.

Mourners later converged at his residence to commiserate with the family, among whom were the Vice-Chancellor Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia. Three former Vice Chancellors, Prof. Akilagpa Sawyerr, Prof. Ivan Addae-Mensah, and Prof. C.N.B. Tagoe also attended the ceremony.

A biography read at the ceremony, catalogued his life, and achievements, pointing to a man who had by dint of work, climbed to a high academic ladder.  Prof. Dakubu, a Professor of Chemistry played a pioneering role in championing the formation of an ICT Directorate, now the University of Ghana Computing Systems.  The development of the ICT landscape in the University is a testimony to the significant role he played in the formative stages and following this through even after his retirement.  Prof. Dakubu was also a major force in Academic Research Network in Ghana and beyond.

A number of tributes were paid in his memory.  In separate tributes from Prof. Ivan Addae-Mensah and Prof. Jerome Djangmah, both went down memory lane and spoke of their experiences as secondary school students, and the impact he made on them in his capacity as teacher, colleague, mentor and friend.  The Head of Department of Chemistry, Prof. Robert Kingsford-Adaboh, was full of praise for Prof. Dakubu, who he said will be remembered for his style of lectureship especially in the teaching of thermodynamics.

A deserving tribute also came from the University of Ghana Computing Services (UGCS) which brought to light the towering impact Prof. Dakubu had on many of the IT employees at the Directorate.  As Prof. Addae-Mensah noted, many of the professionals at the UGCS have become “stars” in the field due to the mentoring they received from Prof. Dakubu.
