Mr. Collins Makafui Dey-Sadika, a level 200 Geography and History student, who was recently adjudged the overall best delegate of the Lifelink Tertiary Model United Nations (LTMUN) 2015, has called on the Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Kwame Offei.

The purpose of the visit was to officially present the award to the University. Mr. Dey-Sadika was accompanied by the Director of the Counselling and Placement Centre, Mrs. Jocelene Buckman and a Counsellor from the Centre, Rev. Dr. Mrs. Bridget Ben-Naimah. Collins, who patronizes the career development services offered by the Counselling and Placement Centre of the University of Ghana, was encouraged to apply to participate in the program during the Long Vacation as part of his career development program.

He informed Prof. Offei that the event gave him the opportunity to test and improve his research and communication skills, and the ability to network with like-minded people across the world. This, he said is a giant step towards achieving his ambition of becoming an International Relations and Security Analyst.

Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kwame Offei, congratulated him on the achievement. He thanked Collins for making the University of Ghana proud and hoped that many more students would do the same, especially with the inception of the Experiential Learning Program.

The Pro-VC further expressed concern about the disinterest of students in patronizing the rich services provided by the Counselling and Placement Centre, which include career development programmes, career counselling, career fairs, peer counselling training, leadership seminars and the Employability Hub. He encouraged lecturers and Heads of Department to encourage students to get involved in the activities of the Centre in order to be holistically educated.

The Tertiary Model United Nations event, was organized by Lifelink Friendship Schools, Ghana, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The three day Conference which focused on the theme, ‘The Role of the Youth in Tackling Socio-Economic Challenges of the International System’ was attended by about a hundred tertiary students from across the world. Mr. Collins Makafui Dey-Sadika was selected as a delegate to represent the Republic of Uganda after a successful application process. He specifically researched and did a presentation on the topics, “Education and Religion, Where is the Divide?” and “Gender Inequality amongst Developing and Least Developed Countries in Africa.

In these presentations, Collins sought to analyze the interrelatedness of religion and education across the world, and, especially, in Uganda. He highlighted the dire impact religion has on the educational sector and the need to consider restructuring the relationship between the two sectors in order for it to inure to its benefits than cause division.

Secondly, he admitted the menace of gender disparity and, using Uganda as a case study, cited the contributions of gender consideration in development initiatives, pointing out the challenges and projections into the future. He further made suggestions to help improve the state of gender imbalance across the African continent.

With these, Mr. Collins Makafui Dey-Sadika won three certificates and awards which included a fully sponsored trip to Harvard University, U.S.A., to participate in the Harvard Model United Nations Summit 2016.
