Parliamentary Committee on Education Assesses GETFund Projects on UG Campus

Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, led by Hon. Amankwa Asiamah, Chairperson, have assessed GETFund projects on the University of Ghana campus.

Welcoming the delegation to the University, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development, Prof. Felix A. Asante, stated the University’s readiness to work with the Committee to see to the successful completion of all the projects.

Mr. Charles Kofinti, Ag. Director, Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) made a detailed presentation on the state of GETFund projects at a brief meeting, chaired by Prof. A. Asante, prior to the tour.

For all the 7 projects, Mr.  Kofinti provided the year of commencement, initial estimates, revised estimates, amount invested so far, level of completion, facilities of the project and the University’s contribution. He noted that while the Faculty of Arts and the Dental School buildings which commenced in 2007 are about 90% complete, the School of Allied Health Sciences building, a 7-storey building, which also started in 2007 stalled after the construction of the first floor. Mr.  Kofinti indicated that the School of Performing Arts building, one of the largest projects on campus, which was started in 2005 is about 65% complete. He added that the building when completed will have a multi-purpose theatre and about 30 offices. Other uncompleted projects he touched on were the Phase 1 of the Earth Science building and Phase 2 of the School of Engineering Sciences Building. He informed the committee that the 10,000-capacity sports stadium which was started in 2008, is being completed to host sporting activities for the All Africa games in 2023.

During the tour, the Ag. Director of PDMSD provided more details about the projects and answered questions from the Members of Parliament. At the end of the tour, the Committee members expressed appreciation for the warm reception and detailed information provided by the University officials.
