GAUA-Legon Elects New Executives

Mr. Baffour Awuah Kwabi, Newly Elected President of GAUA

The Legon Branch of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has elected new executives to steer the affairs of the Association for a two-year tenure. Mr. Baffour Awuah Kwabi, College Finance Officer, College of Education was elected President together with eight other executives after a secret ballot by members.

Other elected officers are Mr. Michael Owusu Ansah, Vice-President; Mrs. Barbara Blankson, General Secretary; Mr. Emmanuel Godwyll, Assistant General Secretary; Mr. Samuel Nkrumah, Treasurer; and three other executive members, namely, Mrs. Arhizah Blay-Abiti, Mr. Philip Quaye, and Mr. Ishmael Ato Essien, Mrs. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, Editor.

In her handing over notes, Mrs. Cynthia Adu, outgoing President, noted that during her tenure of office, GAUA (UG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Jeopharma Limited to enable GAUA members and their dependants obtain prescribed medication which were unavailable at the University Hospital Pharmacy. A Welfare Committee was also set up to handle all welfare matters of the association.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, GAUA through the support of members made cash donations of GH¢20,000.00, GH¢50,000.00 and GH¢4,660.00 to the University of Ghana Sports Fund, University of Ghana Endowment Fund and Weija Leprosarium respectively. The donation to the Weija Leprosarium was done in collaboration with National Executive Committee (NEC) of GAUA.

Mrs. Adu also indicated that as part of the Association’s efforts to enlighten members and engender a team spirit among colleagues, a series of seminars and workshops were organised. These included a seminar on Physical Activity for Quality Life in collaboration with the Sports Directorate on what physical activity is, why it is necessary, and how it contributes to preventing and managing non-communicable diseases. The Association in collaboration with the National Executive Committee also organised the GAUA National Continuous Professional Development (CPD) workshop on the theme: Modern Trends in University Administration and Management.

Members of the immediate past executives were Mr. Anab Anaamoatulim, Vice-President, Mrs. Barbara Kuukua Blankson, Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Godwyll, Assistant Secretary, Mr. Samuel Nkrumah, Treasurer, and Mr. Michael Owusu Ansah and Mr. Ishmael Ato Essien who served as Executive Members and Mrs. Emelia Ameyaw Buronyah as Editor of the association.

Mrs. Akua Mirekua Nimako-Boateng of the Office of the Legal Counsel administered the oath of office to the newly elected executives.

In his response, Mr. Baffour Awuah Kwabi, the President-Elect gave thanks to God for giving him the opportunity to serve the association. He also commended the immediate past executives for the good foundation they have laid for the current executives. He further expressed appreciation to the entire membership of GAUA for the confidence reposed in them and indicated that they would count on their support to building on the good foundation laid by the predecessors.

Mr. Kwabi called for unity of purpose among members in pursuing the agenda of the association since “a house divided against itself cannot stand”, he noted. He assured the association of his desire to pursue all outstanding matters left by the past executives to its logical conclusion with the backing of his able team.

In brief remarks, members congratulated the elected executives and pledged their support for a successful tenure, adding that a lot will be expected of the new executives.
