Board of SRC Development Fund Inaugurated to Champion Student-led Initiatives

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare, has inaugurated a seven-member Board of the Students Representative Council (SRC) Development Fund. The Board is to champion the implementation of the physical development projects initiated by students.

In his address, Prof. Gordon Awandare commended the SRC leadership for mobilising the students to improve facilities in the University. He explained that Management is working to improve students’ experience on campus, adding that the Vice-Chancellor’s initiative to digitalise all operations related to students and management of academic work is one of such initiative.

He encouraged the Board to be passionate in discharging their duties and work closely with the SRC to ensure that the Board’s vision is achieved. “You will have to raise funds and work closely with the SRC at every time. Interests may change but the ultimate goal should be that you are trying to build an infrastructure and leave a legacy for the students at the University of Ghana”.

The Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, in brief remarks, on behalf of University Management, congratulated the leadership of the SRC for the initiative, which she noted serves as a legacy for students of the University. She stated that Management will work with the Board in making sure money put aside are used for the expected projects.

Mrs. Agyei-Mensah stated that Management is passionate about creating better student experience. “I always say that happy students are transformed into happy alumni, who are very happy to come back and give to the University that did so much for them,” she said.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, was glad that the Graduate School Association of Ghana (GRASAG) and the SRC had realised that students’ welfare should be their priority.

The Speaker of SRC General Assembly, Rt. Hon. Stephen Awuah-Pobi provided a brief background information that led to the initiative and outlined projects anticipated to be funded. These included a 6,000-bed capacity SRC student hostel, a Student Experience Centre and support for the hotspot zones, being undertaken under the Vice-Chancellor’s digitalization programme.

Rt. Hon. Awuah-Pobi, congratulated Management and the Asumadu-Ndukwe led SRC administration on the planning and implementation of this vision.

Earlier, the former SRC president, Mr. Prince Asumadu, extended appreciation to Management and Members present, and explained that from the beginning of the next academic year, students are going to be charged an amount of ₵135.00, from which₵100.00 will be channeled to the physical development projects outlined.

The GRASAG-UG President, Ms. Christiana Adu, said, “SRC and GRASAG leadership have been working together since our leadership came into force. These initiatives are a paradigm shift on the activities that students embark on.”

She declared the intention of GRASAG and the SRC to transform student leadership into a development-oriented one and help in turning around the fortunes of the student front and student welfare.

The Chair of the SRC Development Fund Board, Dr. Haggar Hilda Ampadu, Inspector-General of Schools, National Schools Inspectorate Authority, in brief remarks expressed appreciation to Management and appealed to all stakeholders to support in positively changing students’ lives and experiences on the UG campus.

Members of the Board expressed their appreciation for the privilege to serve the students of the University of Ghana and further pledged their commitment to serve genuinely.

Dr. Charles Brenya Wiafe-Akenteng, Head of Halls, also expressed his excitement about the hostel project and hoped that it will support Management’s effort at solving accommodation challenges in the University. The other members of the SRC Development Fund Board are Prof. Rosina Kyerematen,

Dean of Student Affairs; Mr. Boakye Martin Gyasi, SRC President Elect; Mr. Prince Asumadu, Initiating President; Mr. Anyan Benjamin Botwe, Alumni Member; Mr. Samuel Osei Mensah, Students’Accounts Office; a yet to be named appointee with a legal background to serve as Secretary to the Board. Members of the Board will serve a three (3) year tenure.

Also present at the ceremony were SRC Presidents and Executive Committees from University of Ghana, Accra City Campus, and Valley View University.
