2016 Africa Universities Summit Closes

The two day 2016 Africa Universities Summit which brought together over 150 delegates from the University of Ghana and various Universities across Africa, and Europe, came to a close on Friday, April 29, 2016 at the ISSER Conference Hall. An initiative of Times Higher Education, the Summit was held in partnership with University of Ghana. Presentations at the Summit included topics such as, ‘Public and Private - Are Both Essential to a Strong University Sector in Africa?’, ‘South-South and North-South Relationships: Two different Approaches’, ‘Capacity Building And Building Capacity - How To Educate Africa's Youth’ , ‘Financing of African Higher Education’ and ‘Managing Brain Drain, Brain Gain and Brain Circulation’. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey in closing remarks noted that the University of Ghana was proud to be the host institution for the summit. He expressed excitement that the two-days of deliberations had sustained interest and discussions on how to strategize and transform higher education across the continent. Prof. Aryeetey underscored the need for the institutions to strengthen and make the most out of public-private partnerships both in academia and industry.

Phil Baty, Editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings who also spoke at the closing ceremony, indicated that Universities in Africa are in the forefront of playing a major role in the diversity of development needs across the continent.

He noted that one way to achieve a system of educational excellence in Africa, largely depends on a sustained investment in research and capacity building of faculty.

Phil Baty expressed the hope that the Summit will enable transfer of knowledge and expertise amongst summit participants, researchers and policy makers on how best to restructure higher education in Africa.
