About

Dr. (Mrs.) Gladys Odey Schwinger is a Lecturer at the Department of Plant and Environmental Biology of the University of Ghana, College of Basic and Applied Sciences and the School of Biological Sciences. She holds a BSc. and MPhil. degrees in Botany and a PhD in Environmental Science, all from the University of Ghana. She has also benefited from international training on gathering, disseminating, and communicating data on biodiversity.

Dr. Schwinger started work in environmental non-governmental organizations and as an environmental consultant till she took a contract position with the then Department of Botany as an Assistant Lecturer, a position that launched her career in academia.

Her exposure has made her very passionate about biodiversity conservation and her recent interests are in gathering and using data on indigenous Ghanaian plant species, especially, those useful in plant medicine. She aims at forging interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues from within and beyond the University of Ghana and the country to obtain holistic information on vegetation, species, and their uses to inform activities on their conservation.

Dr. Schwinger’s current publications are on medicinal plant use and biodiversity data sharing in Ghana.

Her expertise are in plant taxonomy, ecology, and biodiversity data management with very good knowledge of geographical information systems and modeling.
