SECTION A: Personal Statement
Ajediran Idowu, BELLO holds Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Orthopaedic, Sports and Recreation as well as PhD in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. He joined Department of Physiotherapy as Principal Research Assistant in the defunct School of Allied Health Sciences (now School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences) University of Ghana in 2007. He had early career practice as a Community Physiotherapist under the aegis of the Christo Blind Mission (an NGO) as well as German Leprosy Relief Association (GLRA) serving as advocate for prevention of disability among patients living with wide range of disabilities in underserved communities. With his vast clinical experience, he saw the need to bring his experience to bear which compelled him to embark on academic exploration at the University of Ghana since 2007 to date. He has risen through the ranks to become Associate Professor.
Over the years, Professor Bello has beamed his research interest on generating data in support of best strategy for restoring optimal body function. His efforts in this regard have galvanized the quest to optimize the existing modes of therapeutic approaches within the purview of musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice. With the spate of increase in the prevalence of lifestyle related diseases, he has also developed special stakes in cardiovascular health. His specific focus has been on evaluation of the efficacy of the existing therapeutic approaches whilst using criterion-based approach to establish novel therapeutic strategies with regard to rehabilitation/treatment outcome. He also delves in activity modification (Exercise) in relation to patterns of human cardiovascular events and remediation of impairments/dysfunction within the purview of physiotherapy practice. He has won research grants in this respect both as Principal Investigator and/or Co-Investigator.
Professor Bello has supervised over 100 undergraduate students and has taught several courses from 2008 to date including Kinesiology, Patho-kinesiology, Physiotherapy in Rheumatology, Traumatic Skeletal Disorders, Ergonomics and Industrial Physiotherapy as well as Physiotherapy in Geriatrics. He has also served as resource person in workshops and conferences to discuss topical issues that are physiotherapy practice related. In addition to his academic schedules, he offers consultative services as a visiting physiotherapist to the Central Bank of Ghana Physiotherapy Clinic, Accra, to date. Professor Bello has published in many peer reviewed journals including a book and three book chapters.
