The departments of Philosophy and Classics were both created in 1948 as foundation units of the Faculty of Arts in what was then the University College of the Gold Coast. In 2010 these units merged into a Department of Philosophy and Classics.

The departments of Philosophy and Classics were both created in 1948 as foundation units of the Faculty of Arts in what was then the University College of the Gold Coast. In 2010 these units merged into a Department of Philosophy and Classics.
Following the merger, undergraduate students take the same courses at Level 100 and Level 200, but major in either Philosophy or Classics at Level 300 and Level 400 or do a combined major with either Philosophy or Classics, both not both. At the graduate level, the two sections run separate programmes. Currently, the Classics section runs BA, MA, MPhil and PhD programmes, while the Philosophy section runs BA, MPhil and PhD programmes.
The department has produced world-class scholars such as Kwasi Wiredu, William Abraham, Kwame Gyekye and Kwame Anthony Appiah.

The Department’s vision is to be first choice among local and international students for the development and promotion of the creative and critical capacities of students.
Mission
The Department’s mission is to educate students in critical literacy and in the systematic recovery of values and principles from past and contemporary experience for the promotion and development of human excellence.
