The Department of Nutrition and Food Science (NFS), in collaboration with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and GB Foods, organized a food safety outreach programme aimed at sensitizing food vendors across the University of Ghana campus on safe food handling practices and renewing their food safety permits. Preparations began on Wednesday, 3rd June, with a pre-training session held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Nutrition Lab of the NFS Department, where facilitators from the FDA's Consumer Education Department equipped volunteers ahead of the main activity.

The outreach itself took place on Friday, 5th June, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants assembled at the forecourt of the NFS Department before being organized into groups and dispatched to various food vendor locations across campus. NFS student volunteers, easily identifiable by their department T-shirts, were joined by about 22 FDA staff and National Service personnel, as well as roughly 15 representatives from GB Foods, creating a valuable opportunity for students to network and engage with professionals about careers in industry and government agencies. The teams, largely led by the FDA, inspected vendor sites, offered guidance on food safety concerns such as adulteration, and distributed fliers covering safer food practices and the safety of canned foods. Vendors who satisfied inspection standards were rewarded with aprons to encourage continued good practice.
The exercise not only strengthened food safety compliance among campus vendors but also gave students practical insight into how food safety principles are applied and enforced in real settings, bridging the gap between classroom learning and industry practice.
