Legon Leadership Academy’s Fifth Workshop Opens with Call for Greater Institutional Impact
Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has called for a more aggressive drive to market and expand the Legon Leadership Academy, telling participants at the opening of its latest workshop that the University must work harder to build on the foundation already laid.
Speaking at the opening of the Academy's fifth workshop, Professor Amfo urged participants to see themselves as ambassadors once they complete the training. She also reminded the gathering that the academy was founded on the conviction that a strong university depends not only on scholarship and research standing but also on capable leadership at every level.
She stressed that leadership is not confined to formal positions of authority, describing it instead as a set of competencies, values and practices that enable people to inspire others, manage change and advance institutional goals.
One of the most significant developments Professor Amfo highlighted was the university's move to embed leadership development into its appointment processes. New appointees to leadership positions across the university are now required, as a condition in their letters of appointment, to undertake designated leadership modules offered by the academy.
The Vice-Chancellor further said the university is working toward a system in which completion of specific modules becomes a formal requirement for eligibility for leadership positions, a step she described as institutionalising leadership development within the university's governance and capacity-building framework. She also announced progress on a dedicated building project for the academy, describing it as a long-term investment in leadership development.
The Vice-Chancellor urged participants to treat the workshop as more than a routine training event, encouraging them to engage actively, ask difficult questions and share their own experiences rather than participate passively. She thanked the academy's implementation team and facilitators for their work in turning the initiative into what she called "an enduring institutional legacy.”
The fifth workshop, which runs from 8th to 17th September 2026, is being held at the Cedi Conference Centre, University of Ghana and features modules including Higher Education Institutions and UG Management Structure and Research Leadership and Management. The workshops are designed to provide participants with an intensive platform for developing the leadership knowledge, competencies and institutional perspectives required to contribute effectively to the University's strategic goals.
