ITD Multimedia Unit Conducts 5-Day Technology Training for UG Security Personnel

The Multimedia Unit of the Information Technology (IT) Directorate recently organised a comprehensive five-day training programme for security personnel from the Safety and Security Services Directorate (SSSD) of the University of Ghana. The training, which covered both indoor simulation and outdoor practical sessions, introduced participants to emerging technologies relevant to campus security and environmental management.

The training programme was designed and facilitated by the Multimedia Unit to equip security staff with practical skills in drone technology and flight simulation. Participants were exposed to theoretical foundations as well as hands-on operational experience, enabling them to appreciate the potential application of these technologies in supporting security and infrastructure monitoring across the University of Ghana campus.

The indoor component of the training was conducted at the IT Directorate's multimedia studio, a purpose-built, acoustically treated facility equipped with large-screen displays and simulation hardware. Participants engaged with flight simulator software, gaining confidence in UAV control principles in a safe, controlled environment before transitioning to real-world operations.

The outdoor sessions provided participants with direct experience in operating a DJI drone under the guidance of the Multimedia Unit team. Trainees were taken through pre-flight checks, take-off and landing procedures as well as basic flight manoeuvres. The sessions were held at the PDMSD premises and surrounding areas of the University, giving participants an appreciation of the aerial surveillance capabilities available for campus management.

This initiative reflects the IT Directorate's commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of the broader University community. By extending its expertise beyond its immediate constituency, the Multimedia Unit has demonstrated how technology units can serve as enablers of capacity building across directorates. The training is expected to enhance the operational effectiveness of the security team and open avenues for future inter-directorate collaboration.

The Multimedia Unit looks forward to building on this collaboration and exploring additional training opportunities to support the University of Ghana's strategic priorities.
