Ghanaian Musician Black Sherif Pays Courtesy Call on Vice-Chancellor Ahead of Zaama Disco Concert

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has reiterated the University’s strong appreciation for the arts, describing creative expression as a powerful force for national development and social transformation.

She made these remarks when award-winning Ghanaian musician Black Sherif paid a courtesy call on her ahead of his upcoming Zaama Disco Concert scheduled to take place at the University’s Sports Stadium.

Welcoming the artist and his team, Professor Amfo noted that while the University of Ghana is widely recognised as an academic institution, it also places significant value on creativity, storytelling and cultural expression.

“When people think of the University of Ghana, they think of academic activities but we also have a deep appreciation of the arts,” she said, adding that art plays a critical role in shaping societies and complementing academic inquiry.

The Vice-Chancellor described Black Sherif as a symbol of national culture and art, commending him for projecting Ghanaian values and stories to the world through his music. She congratulated him on being Ghana’s most streamed artist on Spotify this year, noting that his success reflects discipline, authenticity and hard work.

Professor Amfo encouraged the artiste to remain conscious of his influence, especially among the youth and urged his team to ensure that the forthcoming concert is conducted safely and in strict adherence to University regulations.

She further expressed the University’s desire for the engagement to go beyond a one-off event, proposing future collaborations with the School of Performing Arts, where Black Sherif could interact with students and faculty as part of the University’s strategic priority on engagement and partnerships as well as creating a transformative student experience.

Black Sherif recounted his journey from freestyling in neighbourhoods in Accra to performing on global stages, noting that hosting the concert at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium was the fulfilment of a long-held dream.
