UG Receives Financial Aid Support from Long-Standing Partner Latex Foam

The University of Ghana has once again received support for financial aid beneficiaries from one of its enduring corporate partners, Latex Foam. This support reaffirms a decade-long collaboration aimed at improving access to higher education for brilliant but financially challenged students.

At a brief presentation held at the Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA’s) Office, Latex Foam presented an amount of GHS 20,000 to support needy students. This donation forms part of a long-standing corporate social responsibility initiative that has directly benefitted students who would otherwise struggle to cover essential academic expenses.

The Public Relations Officer of Latex Foam, Ms. Gifty Appiah reaffirmed the company’s unwavering commitment to education, noting that the partnership initiated more than ten years ago remains a bedrock of its CSR agenda.

The partnership, she added comprises internship opportunities for students selected by the Students Financial Aid Office and Centre for Disability Studies and Advocacy. They will be provided with practical work experience during the long vacation. ‘Every student who participates in the internship programme is remunerated, ensuring that their contributions are valued and that they return to school with some financial support.’

Ms. Appiah highlighted Latex Foam’s additional support to the University community, including periodic refurbishment of the SRC building and related facilities as part of its dedication to enhancing the student environment.

Accepting the donation on behalf of Management, Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA), Prof. Gordon Awandare, expressed profound appreciation to Latex Foam for honouring its commitment year after year. He underscored the importance of consistency in such support especially at a time when many students face significant financial hardship, as some students sacrifice basic needs, including meals after paying their fees.

‘This contribution from Latex Foam brings immediate relief and restores dignity to students who are determined to pursue their education despite difficult circumstances,’ Prof. Awandare noted.

He added that the University remains hopeful that, as the company continues to grow, the support would gradually increase in future years.

The Head of the Students’ Financial Aid Office, Ms. Selina Torrison Saaka, expressed deep appreciation for Latex Foam’s continued partnership, noting that even contributions that are considered modest, collectively transform the University’s Needy Students Fund. ‘This fund supports a wide range of scholarship schemes targeting various categories of financially vulnerable students,’ she added.

Ms. Saaka encouraged prospective and continuing students to actively explore the many scholarship opportunities available. ‘Students are assessed based on demonstrated financial need, academic performance and Ghanaian citizenship. For continuing students, required CGPAs range between 2.5 and 3.7 depending on the specific scholarship, while first-year students with WASSCE aggregates between 06 to 20 are eligible to apply for various support packages,’ she explained.
