LECIAD and Embassy of the Czech Republic Convene Event to Spotlight Africa–Europe Security Interconnections

The Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD), in partnership with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ghana and with support from AFRIPOLI, has convened a high-level workshop to spotlight the deep interconnections between Africa’s and Europe’s security systems.
Held under the theme “Security is Borderless: How Africa and Europe’s Security are Connected,” the event gathered diplomats, academics, policymakers, and media practitioners to discuss shared challenges and collaborative approaches to security.
Prof. Peter Quartey, Acting Director of LECIAD and Chair for the session, stressed the need for integrated responses to global security threats.
“We cannot operate our security systems in silos. What happens in one region has ripple effects across the world. Tackling security issues is not just about safety, but about enabling growth and stability,” he noted.
Panelists explored urgent topics including the Sahel crisis, Russia’s growing influence in Africa, disinformation campaigns, and migration. They emphasised the pressing need for stronger African agency in shaping the global security landscape.
The panel featured Dr. Ken Ahorsu and Dr. Efua Boatemaa Yahohene, both Senior Research Fellows at LECIAD; Mr. Kent Mensah, journalist; and Mr. Vojtěch Bílý from Afripoli. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Matej Denk, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Czech Republic.
The dialogue underscored that resilient and inclusive security requires cross-continental partnerships that prioritise African-led strategies while fostering mutual growth and stability.
