UG Confucius Institute Celebrates 2025 International Chinese Language Day with Colourful Talent Show

The 2025 International Chinese Language Day was marked in grand style at the University of Ghana under the global theme “Chinese Language: A Gift Across Time and Space.” The event, organised by the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana (CI-UG), brought together academics, diplomats, students and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate the enduring legacy and global relevance of the Chinese language.

In his opening remarks, Ghanaian Director of the Confucius Institute, Professor Clement K. I. Appah, described the Chinese language as “a timeless gift” and “a bridge connecting cultures and continents.” He acknowledged the support of the Chinese Embassy, UG management and the Chinese business community in Ghana for their continued sponsorship of language education and youth development.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo reaffirmed the University’s commitment to expanding partnerships with Chinese institutions. She also called on Chinese companies in Ghana to support internship opportunities for students as part of UG’s strategic focus on student transformation. “Language is a powerful tool that transcends borders and fosters connections,” she said.

She revealed that UG is actively working through the Confucius Institute and the International Programmes Office to establish more partnerships with Chinese universities.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, traced the history of the UN’s recognition of Chinese Language Day and celebrated the language’s adaptability and beauty. He thanked UG and the local Chinese community for their contributions to Chinese language education in Ghana.

Chairman of the Ghana Association of Chinese Society, Mr. Tang Hong, commended the Institute’s impact on global cultural exchange and diplomacy, calling the Chinese language “a gift across time and space” that transcends generations and geography.

A highlight of the programme was a student talent show featuring 15 contestants from basic and junior high schools, who showcased their Mandarin proficiency through poetry, music, self-introductions and cultural performances. The Primary School Champion was Nyamedea Akuokoh-Acheampong from RisingSun Montessori, while Afua Ampaw of Cornerstone International Academy emerged as the Junior High School Champion.

All participants received certificates with top performers receiving mobile phones, headsets, watches and gift bags as prizes.

The event ended on a high note with cultural performances by UG students studying the Chinese language, reaffirming the role of language as a connector across time, space and cultures.
