University of Ghana Recognised for Excellence in Enterprise Risk Management

The University of Ghana has been recognised for its outstanding performance in Enterprise Risk Management, emerging as first runner-up in a national assessment conducted by the Internal Audit Agency (IAA). The recognition highlights the University’s proactive approach to safeguarding institutional resources, mitigating risks and promoting operational efficiency.

The nationwide competition, which assessed the implementation of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) systems across tertiary institutions, saw the University for Development Studies (UDS) emerge as the overall winner, with the University of Ghana placing second and the Cape Coast Technical University ranking as second runner-up.

A team from the Internal Audit Directorate, led by Prof. Samuel Nana Yaw Simpson, Deputy Director, presented the award to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, at a meeting.

Briefing the Vice-Chancellor on the competition and the University’s performance, Prof. Simpson explained that despite the short notice for submissions, the University successfully compiled and submitted a comprehensive report demonstrating its risk management strategies, cost-saving interventions and stakeholder engagement efforts. “The notice was short, but with teamwork, commitment and the support of management, we were able to put together strong documentation that reflected the University’s progress in enterprise risk management,” he said.

The Deputy Director further noted that the submission included evidence-based documentation and video testimonials from Management and the Internal Audit Directorate, which strengthened the University’s case for recognition.

Commending the team, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated them for lifting the University’s image and urged continuous improvement in documentation, visibility and strategic communication of risk management efforts. She also emphasised the importance of leveraging student volunteers and digital tools for storytelling, institutional archiving and event coverage, adding that “in today’s environment, if it is not recorded, shared or put online, it is as though it never happened.”
