UG Vice-Chancellor Calls on Chinese Companies to Support Student Internships as Stakeholders Mark 2025 Chinese Language Day
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has called on Chinese companies operating in Ghana to offer internship opportunities to University of Ghana students.
She made the call while addressing participants at the 2025 International Chinese Language Day celebration, organised by the Confucius Institute at the University.
Prof. Amfo noted that such partnerships would advance the University’s strategic objective of providing a transformative student experience. “Language is a powerful tool that transcends borders and fosters connections,” she said, adding that language education is vital to building global competencies and fostering intercultural collaboration.
Held under the theme “Chinese Language: A Gift Across Time and Space,” the celebration brought together university officials, Chinese diplomats, educators, and students to promote cultural understanding through language learning.
In his opening remarks, Ghanaian Director of the Confucius Institute, Professor Clement K. I. Appah, described the Chinese language as “a timeless gift” and “a bridge connecting cultures and continents.”
He acknowledged the support of the Chinese Embassy, the University of Ghana, and the Chinese business community in Ghana for their continued sponsorship of language education and youth development.
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, traced the history of the United Nations’ recognition of Chinese Language Day and highlighted the language’s adaptability and cultural richness.
He expressed appreciation to the University of Ghana and the local Chinese community for their long-standing contributions to the promotion of Chinese language education in the country.
Also addressing the gathering, Chairman of the Ghana Association of Chinese Society, Mr. Tang Hong, praised the Confucius Institute for its growing role in fostering global cultural exchange. He described the Chinese language as “a gift across time and space” that connects generations and transcends geographical boundaries.
A major highlight of the event was a student talent show featuring 15 contestants from basic and junior high schools. Participants showcased their Mandarin skills through poetry recitations, musical performances, self-introductions, and cultural displays.
All contestants received certificates of participation, with top performers receiving mobile phones, headsets, watches, and gift bags as prizes.
The celebration ended on a lively note with traditional cultural performances, reaffirming the role of language as a connector across time, space and cultures.
