UG Pensioners Association Holds Annual Get- Together

In the spirit of unity and camaraderie, the University of Ghana Pensioners Association held its annual meeting and get-together at the Pensioners Association premises.

The occasion provided an opportunity to review the 2023 Pensioners Association's report, reminisce about the memories forged in the past year and joyously commemorate the commencement of a new year.

In opening the meeting, a minute of silence was observed in honour of departed members of the Association.  

Delivering the welcome address, Mr. David Asante, Vice-Chairman of the UG Pensioners Association stated that, it is in the tradition of the Association to organise the annual event to mark the end of a year and welcome the beginning of a new year. He also stressed the importance of taking stock of past events, identifying setbacks and remembering members who passed away in the previous year.

Ms. Theresa Nelson, Secretary of UG Pensioners Association read a Bible scripture from Luke 11:1-8, which contains the Lord’s Prayer.

Following the scripture reading with a word of exhortation, Rev. E.N. Okwei, Chaplain of the Association underscored the importance of prayer in their daily lives. He encouraged colleagues present, to make it a point to build a relationship with the Maker through the act of praying and advised that they find specific times to communicate with God.

In presenting the Annual Report, Mr. Shine Gaveh, Chairman of the UG Pensioners Association, mentioned that it contained activities of the Association from April 2023 to December 2023.

Some of the major activities captured in the report include the election of new executives in March and a swearing-in ceremony in April, as well as the organisation of nine (9) executive meetings and eight (8) general meetings.

The Report also cites the participation of the Association in the University’s 75th anniversary celebration as well a meeting with the Registrar to discuss matters affecting the Association.  

Mr. Gaveh mentioned few challenges faced by the association, which include the lack of a meeting hall, renovation and refurnishing of the Association’s offices, provision of office equipment and communication gadgets as well as transport to aid mobility. 

He ended by expressing gratitude to the executives and members for their tremendous support.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Benedict Fosu Adjei, College Secretary, College of Humanities expressed that the annual gathering of the Association holds a special place in the heart of management due to the dedication and hard work pensioners have exhibited over the years to pave way for the successes the University is enjoying presently.

He conveyed Management’s appreciation to them for their countless years of dedication and commitment which has left an indelible mark on the hearts of the University community.  

Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, shared her excitement in seeing members well and fit. She encouraged them to keep healthy and safe as they carry out their daily activities and wished them the best of luck.

Goodwill messages were received from UTAG-UG, GAUA-UG, GCB (University of Ghana branch), CSIR and TEWU.

The event was attended by Executives and members of the Pensioners Association, Dr. Yvonne Lamptey, Director, HRODD; Dr. Beatrice Mensah, CSIR –Pensioners Association; Mr. Philip Quaye, Vice-President, GAUA and Ms. Khadija Amin (GCB representative).
