UG Athletes Participating in 15th West African University Sports Federation Championship in Nigeria

A contingent of student-athletes are in Nigeria to represent the University at the on-going West African University Sports Federation (WAUSF) Championships, at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile Ife, Nigeria, from December 16th to 22nd, 2023.

This edition of WAUSF holds particular significance as Obafemi Awolowo University becomes the first Nigerian university to host the Championship more than once. This prestigious sporting event will bring together over 50 universities across the region, showcasing talents in various disciplines, including table tennis, basketball, athletics and more.

Established as a platform to foster unity and healthy competition among West African universities, the West African University Sports Federation Championship has a rich history. It serves as a crucial avenue for student athletes to display their athletic prowess, competing in various disciplines and also building lasting friendships across borders. The Championship plays a significant role in promoting sportsmanship, camaraderie and the overall development of the participating students. The championship occurs periodically, with the games taking place every four years.

The Director of Sports at UG, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, expressed the University's commitment to ensuring that UG athletes are well-prepared for the competition. Dr. Bitugu stated, "We believe in the power of sports to not only foster physical well-being but also to instill discipline, teamwork, and resilience in our students. The West African University Sports Federation Championship provides an excellent platform for our athletes to showcase their talent on a regional stage."

Emmanuel Bruce-Okine, Head of Athletics at UG, shared his excitement about the upcoming competition, emphasising the dedication and hard work of the athletes. "Our team is ready to face the challenges ahead. We have trained rigorously, focusing on both physical fitness and mental preparedness. We aim to make our University proud and bring home victories in various disciplines," Bruce-Okine affirmed.

The team was accompanied by disciplined coaches and a select staff of the Sports Directorate.
