Tree Planting Exercise in Honour of Mr. Roland Hartford Held

The Department of Plant and Environmental Biology, University of Ghana has hosted a planting of Samanea Saman tree at the Botanical Gardens. The exercise was undertaken in collaboration with the Management and Staff of Republic Bank Ghana Limited in honour of Mr. Roland Hartford, a retiring Chairman of the Board, Republic Financial Holdings Limited.

In a short address, Mr. Farid Antar, Managing Director, Republic Bank Ghana, disclosed that Mr. Roland Hartford was very instrumental in the Group’s decision to invest in Ghana; and his support for Republic Bank Ghana during his tenure of office was immeasurable. He added that, the tree planting was to symbolize his enormous contribution while in the service of the Bank for the past Fifty-Four (54) years.

Prof. Augustine Ocloo, Dean of the School of Biological Sciences

In brief remarks, the Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, Prof. Augustine Ocloo, expressed appreciation to the Bank for their collaboration with the University and commended them for planting a tree, which is significant in the life of every human being.

Dr. Ebenezer Owusu, Head, Department for Plant and Environmental Biology

The Head of Department for Plant and Environmental Biology, Dr. Ebenezer Owusu, expressed gratitude to the Bank for choosing the University as the ideal location to plant and nurture the symbolic tree in honour of Mr. Hartford. He commended the Management of Republic Bank Ghana Limited for this laudable gesture in a bid to ensure that the legacy of Mr. Hartford lives on 50 years and beyond.

The Managing Director, Mr. Farid Antar; Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, Prof. Augustine Ocloo and the Head of Department for Plant and Environmental Biology, Dr. Ebenezer Owusu planted trees to commemorate the event. A placard was also mounted in recognition of Mr. Ronald Hartford’s service and commitment to the Group.

Mr. Farid Antar, Managing Director of Republic Bank Ghana later presented a cheque of Fifty-Five Thousand Ghana Cedis to the Head of Department for Plant and Environmental Biology, Dr. Ebenezer Owusu to aid in the operations of the Department.

Present at the ceremony were Dr. Samuel Addo, Head, Marine and Fisheries; Dr. Eureka Ahadjie Adomako, Senior Lecturer, Plant and Environmental Biology; Dr. James Kojo Adomako, Senior Lecturer, Plant and Environmental Sciences; Mr. Emmanuel D. Godwyll, Assistant Registrar, School of Biological Sciences Staff of Republic Bank Ghana Limited as well as members of the University community.
