Stanbic Bank Donates 40 Laptops to Support VC’s ‘1 Student 1 Laptop’ Initiative

Stanbic Bank Ghana, as part of its plan to accelerate growth by providing Africa's human resources with the necessary technological tools, has contributed 40 brand-new laptops in support of the '1 Student, 1 Laptop' project, championed by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.

Mr. Kwamina Asomaning, Chief Executive of the Bank, stated at the presentation of the laptops that Stanbic Bank aligns with the vision of the VC to bridge the gap in access to technological resources that facilitate effective teaching, learning and research.

Mr. Kwamina Asomaning, Chief Executive of the Bank

“The most important asset of Africa as a continent is its people; no matter how good your crop yields are, if you don’t have the people who can further the engineering of the crop yields, those efforts will come to a halt and so we are very much aligned with improving the human capital of this great University. We find ourselves in the 4th industrial revolution and one of the key elements of that is the concept of digitalisation and technology and it is almost impossible to pursue any initiatives in technology if you don’t have access to computing power. As an institution, we are interested in driving Africa’s growth and ensuring that Africa’s resources are equipped with the tools that allow them to contribute in this new paradigm,” Mr. Asomaning said.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, who received the laptops, thanked the Bank for their donation and added that the computers will be very helpful in producing students who are adept at using technology.

“I’m very excited to receive this support from Stanbic Bank. It was a year ago in April that we launched this initiative to enhance the University of Ghana student experience through digitalisation. The 1S1L initiative is part of 3 Policies we are trying to put up to improve student life on Campus. I am happy to note that I have received communication from the Ministry of Education and they are helping us get more laptops at reduced prices. We seek to train students that are digitally educated irrespective of the discipline they are studying. We are thankful for the donation and hope that we can work together on more of such projects”, Professor Appiah Amfo.

Professor Tweneboah Koduah, a member of the '1 Student 1 Laptop' Implementation Committee, expressed appreciation to the Bank on behalf of the student recipients, noting that the gesture will have a significant impact on academic lives. Professor Tweneboah Kodua also mentioned the Committee's plans to have two companies produce laptops for university faculty and staff.
