School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Ends the Year with Exciting Dinner and Awards Ceremony

 

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) celebrated the close of the 2022/2023 academic year with an exciting dinner and awards ceremony, honouring exceptional students, faculty, alumni and partners for their remarkable contributions throughout the academic year.

In a joyous setting filled with enthusiastic applause and standing ovations, approximately 40 awards were presented to students, staff, alumni and partner institutions in recognition of their excellent work and contributions to the School.

Dean of SPMS, Prof. Sandow Mark Yidana said the event was in celebration of advancements that the school has made over the years, in student training, research and extension services.

He noted that in addition to acknowledging the work of their most hardworking students and staff, the School is taking pragmatic steps to ensure that the quality of training produced is maintained for all continuing and prospective students.

He added that in order to embrace and encourage practical education rather than examining students based on theory, the School is determined to do more in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI), to further the student experience and augment teaching and research.

Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare in a brief remark congratulated the School for its hard work and dedication towards the growth of the University. He further expressed the acknowledgment of the University’s management to the faculty, for optimising the compact academic year.

Among the honored individuals were Senior Lecturer Dr. Enock Dankyi from the Department of Chemistry, who received the esteemed "Distinguished Teacher" award.  Prof. Kwaku Kyeremeh of the Department of Chemistry was recognised with two distinguished awards in the "Resource Mobilisation" and "Researcher of the Year" categories. Dr. Vincent Teyekpiti from the Department of Mathematics was honored as "Promising Researcher."

Awards were also given to the Best Worker amongst both Senior and Junior staff categories of the School.

For students, certificates were presented to the best in Level 300, Level 400 and MPhil Part II across all 6 Departments of the School. Recipients of the Deans Special Awards included former Vice-Chancellor of the University, Emeritus Prof. Ivan Addae-Mensah, Associate Professor at Computer Science Department, Prof. Ferdinand Katsriku, Professor of Geology at the Department of Earth Science, Prof. Bruce Kofi Banoeng-Yakubo, former Head of the Department of Geology, Prof. Thomas Mba Akabzaa, former Provost, College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Prof. Daniel Kwadwo Asiedu and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, Emeritus Prof. Josef Kwaku Ametefee Amuzu.

Some alumni of the 6 Departments under the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences also received prestigious awards.

Partner institutions including the Ghana Chamber of Mines (GCM), Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas), GCB Bank PLC and Chirano Gold Mines Limited were honored with plaques for their contributions to SPMS' growth and development.
