Renowned Ghanaian Instrumentalist Alfred K. Bannerman Donates High-Quality Musical Instruments to the Department of Music

The Department of Music at the University of Ghana has received a significant boost to its teaching and learning resources, following the official unveiling of a wide range of musical instruments donated by renowned Ghanaian instrumentalist, Alfred K. Bannerman.

The instruments, 59 in total include a Fantom X Keyboard, a Tama drum kit, guitars, PA System, microphones, Ghanaian traditional instruments and recording gear to support student training and creativity.

The ceremony, held at the School of Performing Arts, was graced by university officials including the Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof. Joseph Yaro, Acting Dean of the School of Performing Arts, Prof. Awo Mana Asiedu, and the Head of the Music Department, Dr. Benjamin Amakye-Boateng. 

Mr. Bannerman said the foundation, through which the donation was made, was inspired by the memory of his parents.  “I hope this donation will encourage me to work hard and do even bigger things.”

Prof. Awo Mana Asiedu praised the initiative, noting its potential to transform the academic and creative experiences of students. “Our students are very talented and all they need is a push,” she said, expressing hope that the donor would consider leading a workshop or seminar in future.

Prof. Joseph Yaro added that, “This is a person that we should all have great admiration for. He has deep passion for music, arts and culture,” he said, highlighting Mr Bannerman’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians and creatives.

A highlight of the event included a musical demonstration of the newly donated instruments by Aaron Bebe and the Local Dimensions and the UG Pop Ensemble.
