Over 500 brilliant and needy students of the University of Ghana have been awarded scholarships for the 2022/2023 academic year. Among the beneficiaries were some Students with Special Needs.
The students were presented with their award letters at a brief ceremony organised by the Students Financial Aid Office (SFAO).
In his welcome remarks, Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA), Prof. Gordon Awandare expressed his appreciation to the donors who had made financial contributions to ensure that the scholarships were made available to students who were unable to attend the University due to financial limitations.
He congratulated the students who had gone through the rigorous selection processes to receive the scholarship, and urged them to stay focused on academic excellence by achieving the highest possible grades.

Prof. Awandare also lauded the SFAO for being dynamic and aggressive in raising funds to assist needy students to gain access to education.
Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah implored awardees to go out and do their absolute best to make the University proud and also remember to return to contribute to the provision of financial aid to support the education of needy students as a way of expressing gratitude to the University.

Over the years, two scholarship sponsors, the Fosuaba Educational Fund and Latex Foam Rubber Products Company Ltd, have given scholarships to particular student categories, such as female students and students with special needs, respectively. This year was no exception.
The UG Scholarship has supported over 5000 students since its commencement in 2015. For the 2022/2023 academic year, the UG Scholarship is sponsoring 149 students, with 71 being new beneficiaries and the remaining 78 existing beneficiaries.

The SRC Yi Bi Boa Scholarship has been a proud donor and has supported over 7000 students with fee support which cuts across regular, fee-paying, City Campus and Distance Education students. For the 2022/2023 academic year, the SRC Yi Bi Boa Scholarship is supporting a total of 253 beneficiaries which is made up of 163 new awardees and 88 renewals.
A newly established scholarship named the Jennifer Opoku Asare Service Above Self (JOSAM) Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Madam Jennifer Opoku-Asare Esq. who studied Business Administration at the University of Ghana and pursued and practised law in the United States of America. Her main goal in life was to be of service and help to others, especially the needy, with the view of empowering and positively impacting them. Thus, this scholarship is meant to extend her legacy of service and generosity. This newly outdoored scholarship was awarded to two female students: from School of Law and Business School. Beneficiaries will be given a comprehensive scholarship till the final year.

Speaking on behalf of all donors, the Vice President of the University of Ghana Alumni Association-North America (UGAANA), Dr. Alexander Bilson Darku, expressed his delight at the successful operation of the University of Ghana's scholarship initiative through the Students Financial Aid Office over the years.
Scholarship award letters were presented to students during the event. The beneficiaries and guests present were treated to a documentary that highlights the impact of the work of Students Financial Aid Office on the lives of past beneficiaries.

Some donors present at the ceremony were Mrs. Gifty Ekeocha Appiah, Public Relations Officer of Latex Foam Rubber Products, representatives of the Legon Interdenominational Church and Prof. Charles Ackah, Chairperson of the UG Chaplaincy Board. Also present were the Director of Public Affairs Mrs. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director of Finance, Mrs. Bernice Agudu, the Head of SFAO, Ms. Selina Torrison Saaka, as well as staff from SFAO and the Public Affairs Directorate.
