NMIMR Holds Quiz Contest To Mark World Hepatitis Day Celebration

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) has marked the 2023 World Hepatitis Day with its 3rd World Hepatitis Day Contest for Junior High School Pupils.

The competition served as a platform to educate and raise public awareness about the pressing issue of viral Hepatitis.

World Hepatitis Day (WHD), observed annually on July 28th, coincides with the birthday of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, the renowned scientist who identified the hepatitis B virus in 1967 and subsequently developed the first hepatitis B vaccine two years later.

International organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) commemorate WHD to spotlight the global impact of viral hepatitis, affecting more than 354 million individuals worldwide.

WHD provides a valuable opportunity to enlighten people about the gravity of these infections, showcase CDC's worldwide efforts to combat viral hepatitis and promote preventive actions against these illnesses.

In line with the mission to enhance awareness, Prof. Kofi Bonney of the Department of Virology, highlighted the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research's consistent efforts over the past three years in organizing quiz contests focused on viral Hepatitis.

“These contests, involving Junior High Schools across various Municipalities, aim to educate and inform young minds,” he stated.

“This year, the contest was held in the Ayawaso West Municipality, featuring four schools as finalists: Covenant Presby School, University Staff School, Abelemkpe JHS, and Espo Bestchild School.” Prof. Bonney detailed.

He further explained that engaging young people directly amplifies the awareness campaign, as they become informed advocates who can transmit crucial information to older generations.

Addressing the audience on the importance of focusing on Viral Hepatitis, Prof. Kwadwo A. Kusi, Department of Immunology at the NMIMR, emphasized the need for heightened awareness due to the escalating prevalence of the disease. He stressed the importance of educating the public about preventive measures for a healthier society.

The insightful and educational contest took place at the NMIMR Conference Room, culminating in a victory for Espo Bestchild School, followed by Covenant

Presby in 2nd place, University Staff School in 3rd, and Abelempe JHS securing the 4th position.

The participating schools received certificates of participation, with cash prizes awarded: 1st place received 1000 cedis, 2nd place 700 cedis, 3rd place 500 cedis, and 4th place 300 cedis.

The event was graced by the presence of key figures, including Madam Magaret Kaba, Municipal Director of Education for Ayawaso West, and Dr. Louisa Ademki Matey, Municipal Health Director for Ayawaso West.

Both officials congratulated the contestants for their impressive efforts and intelligence, extending their best wishes for the students’ academic endeavors and encouraging them to share their newfound knowledge with their peers.

To add a touch of entertainment, Ghanaian Highlife artist, and Hepatitis B Ambassador Okyeame Kwame, performed at the event.

Through his performance, Okyeame Kwame urged the public to seek advice from healthcare professionals and consider taking hepatitis vaccinations to curb the spread as well as mitigate viral hepatitis-related deaths in the country.
