Newly Elected GRASAG Executives Engage VC and Management on Student Welfare and Collaborative Leadership

The newly elected executives of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), University of Ghana chapter, have paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, to introduce themselves and discuss their plans for promoting student welfare, academic excellence, collaborative leadership and constructive engagement with University management.

Led by Mr. Sadick Abubakari, President, the delegation included Mr. William Segbenu (Vice-President), Ms. Keziah Opoku Marfo (General Secretary), Mr. Eugene Agyare Mensah (Organising Secretary), Mr. Glen Konadu Gyimadoh (Treasurer) and Ms. Abena Adoma Frimpong (Gender Commissioner).

Welcoming the team, the Vice-Chancellor commended the executives for running a clean election and congratulated them on their electoral victories. She noted that the University’s Transformative Student Experience strategic priority applies to all levels, including graduate students and elaborated on management’s commitment to ensuring that every student’s experience at the University is enriching.

Prof. Amfo also shared updates on initiatives such as the One Student One Laptop project and alumni-supported scholarships aimed at enhancing access and support for students. “We are doing all these to ensure our students have an excellent experience at the University of Ghana,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor further encouraged the team to work collaboratively with management and other stakeholders, particularly under the University’s Engagement and Partnerships focus area. She urged them to ensure continuity in leadership despite short administrative tenures and to maintain transparency and collaboration in all activities.

“Leadership is about service and sustainability,” she added, stressing that student leaders should be remembered for their impact and legacy, rather than using their tenure as a springboard for personal political ambitions.

Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Registrar, reiterated the Vice-Chancellor’s message, assuring the executives of the openness of management to continued engagement with student leaders. She detailed that concerns affecting students should always be brought to the attention of management and that dialogue must be prioritised over confrontation and alternative approaches.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, in her remarks, congratulated the new leaders and urged them to remain non-partisan in their work. She advised them to focus on competence, inclusion and collaboration to advance the welfare of all graduate students.

On her part, Mrs. Lydia A. Nyako-Danquah, Director of Academic Affairs, commended the proactive engagement of past GRASAG administrations with the University and assured them that her office remains open for discussions on academic matters, particularly regarding the implementation of academic policies affecting graduate students.

The meeting marked the first formal engagement between the newly elected GRASAG executives and the University leadership, setting the tone for a collaborative year focused on welfare, inclusivity and academic excellence.
