Newly Appointed HoDs Oriented and Charged to Lead their Respective Departments to Achieve UG’s Mission and Vision

The University of Ghana's Human Resources and Organisational Development Directorate (HRODD) recently organised a three-day orientation programme for 32 newly appointed officers within the University.

During the orientation, the Heads of Departments received guidance and training to align their leadership roles with the University’s mission, vision and core values.

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, highlighted the importance of teamwork and called upon the newly appointed heads to be guided by the University's vision, mission and core values. She also stressed the significance of the Vice-Chancellor's Key Strategic Objectives (KSOs) as guiding principles in their new roles.

Prof. Amfo encouraged the new departmental heads to actively make a positive impact, familiarise themselves with the University's laws, statutes, and procedures and avoid operating on autopilot. She further urged them to strike a balance between their professional responsibilities and personal lives, encompassing family, social and religious aspects.

Dr. Yvonne Ayerki Lamptey, the Director of HRODD, congratulated the new HoDs and expressed optimism about their success in their respective roles. She underscored that the orientation aimed to enhance the officers' lives and promote a healthy balance between work, family, and personal well-being.

Dr. Lamptey assured the officers that the entire University Management was committed to supporting them in their journey toward success, emphasising that they were not alone in navigating the complexities of their roles. She reiterated that all the Heads of Departments were implementers who were fully backed by the University to execute decisions, policies and strategies for the benefit of the University.

"The entire University system is at your disposal for your success," Dr. Lamptey promised. She reaffirmed the University's commitment to providing the necessary resources and support for the officers' growth and development in their leadership roles.

The HRODD Director also called on the Heads to have a clear vision for their respective departments and effectively communicate those visions to their respective team members.

In response, the new Heads outlined their visions for their respective units and pledged their commitment to their assignments.

During the orientation, the Heads received valuable insights on various aspects of their roles, including the HR responsibilities of Heads of Units, the Procurement Processes, UG Promotion Guidelines for Academic Staff, UG Statutes and Procedures, Legal Implications of Certain Actions, the UG Internal Control and Governance System.

 

Other areas covered were Enterprise Risk Management, Work-Life Balance, Stress Management, Mental Wellbeing, the Financial Role of Head of Units, Academic Responsibilities of Heads of Units, Accreditation Process, Academic Quality Assurance, Handling UG Affiliate Institutes, the Management Process, Ethical Implications, and Preparations for Audit.

Additionally, the orientation addressed broader issues related to managing the University's established systems for effective administration.

Participants from the various Colleges and Units across the University actively engaged in the orientation, setting a solid foundation as they commenced their roles.
