MTN Bright Scholarship Empowers 58 UG Students for Academic Success

Fifty-eight students of the University of Ghana have been awarded the prestigious MTN Bright Scholarship for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The awards reflect the strong commitment of the MTN Ghana Foundation to promoting academic excellence, diversity and equal opportunity and forms part of a nationwide initiative that provided scholarships to 500 beneficiaries this year, including 300 students pursuing first degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), vocational and technical disciplines and 200 teachers upgrading their qualifications in public universities.
The awards event held at Wesley Towers in Accra brought together officials of MTN and the MTN Ghana Foundation, representatives of public universities and parents of the awardees.
The 58 UG beneficiaries are enrolled in various programmes across the four Colleges, including Agricultural Engineering, Law, Arts, Computer Science, Geography, Dental Surgery, Education and Social Studies, Accounting, Pharmacy and Information Technology, among others.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana, described the initiative as an investment in Ghana’s future. He mentioned that “Today is not just about awarding scholarships; it is about investing in dreams, unlocking potential and securing the future of Ghana. Our 500 new Bright Scholars represent the richness of Ghana, drawn from every corner of the country and pursuing diverse academic paths. This scholarship is breaking barriers and amplifying impact.”

The CEO further assured that MTN will continue scaling up the programme to transform more lives, “We are committed to supporting education in a sustainable manner. For the next three years, we plan to support 1,500 students and teachers annually, because we believe that education remains the strongest driver of social and economic progress.”
In her welcome remarks, Mrs. Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer (CCSSO) of MTN Ghana, explained that the scheme was introduced to prevent brilliant but needy students from dropping out of school. “Knowledge is like a garden; if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested. The MTN Bright Scholarship came to keep talented students in school.”

Mrs. Adwoa Wiafe urged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity by staying focused and committed to excellence. She encouraged them to adopt a spirit of giving back to society, noting that “this scholarship is not only a privilege but a responsibility to impact others and contribute to national development.”
This year’s beneficiaries were selected from 42 public institutions across the nation, including the University of Ghana, with emphasis on diversity and inclusion, through the selection of 33 differently abled students among the awardees. Females make up 37.4% of the total beneficiaries.

Since its inception, the Bright Scholarship Scheme has supported 720 students, in addition to over 1,000 students who benefited under MTN’s earlier scholarship programmes. Alumni achievements include 10 valedictorians and over 520 First Class graduates, underscoring the scheme’s impact on education and human capital development.
The scholarship package covers tuition, accommodation, stipends and a laptop, providing comprehensive support for the academic journey of beneficiaries.

In attendance were the Director of the Public Affairs Directorate, Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah; Head of the Students Financial Aid Office, Ms. Selina Torisson Saaka and Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Prof. Irene Mawuena Kretchy.
