Delegation from the University of The Gambia Calls on the Vice-Chancellor

A delegation from the University of the Gambia (UTG) has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo to enhance collaboration with the University of Ghana.

Prof. Herbert Robinson, Vice-Chancellor, UTG, who led the delegation, expressed appreciation to UG for the warm reception and noted that there is a need to learn from the University of Ghana through fruitful collaborations to enhance the programmes run by UTG and the Gambian economy.

Prof. Robinson added that it is also necessary for UTG to learn from African Universities to understand the social contexts and challenges unique to the African continent. It is in light of this that UTG is exploring ideas from how units run activities at UG, manage sports infrastructure, and strengthen administrative procedures as areas for development in the University of the Gambia. 

Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo welcomed the delegation and lauded the efforts of the UG Pan-African Doctoral Academy (UG-PADA) for initiating the collaboration and working closely with the University of the Gambia. Prof. Amfo noted that the University of Ghana have forged ahead and an association with both institutions would create diverse opportunities for progress. 

She also announced that collaborations with other universities provide interesting insights into other countries as it was easier to learn from and support each other. Prof. Amfo further expressed delight at the collaboration with UTG and was hopeful that this will yield desirable goals.

Prof. Eric Osei-Assibey, Dean, International Programmes Office, announced that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was being arranged to formalise the relationship between the two institutions. Prof. Osei-Assibey also noted that the collaboration was in line with the University’s internationalisation strategy seeking to forge relationships with the sub-region and the global world.

The Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei Mensah, stated that it is important to leverage on each other’s strengths to improve both institutions. She also presented a brief background on the academic and administrative structures of the University of Ghana.

Dr. Jemima Asabea Anderson, Director for UG-PADA, noted that the mandate of of the Academy is to ensure that training in Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in the sub-region and the continent is strengthened. She added that it is necessary to discover other avenues in expanding and bolstering PhD training with the University of the Gambia.

The Gambian delegation also visited the Korle-Bu Campus, the Careers and Counselling Centre and the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy to interact with the leadership and staff of these Units. 

The delegation from UTG included Dr. Momodou Lamin Tarro, Registrar; Mr. Mbakeh Camara, Director of University Relations; Mr. Alpha M. K. Lowe, Personal Assistant of the Vice-Chancellor and Mr. Alhaji Bah, Financial Controller, Nation Unit. 

Officials from UG at the courtesy call with the Vice-Chancellor were Mrs. Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director, Public Affairs Directorate; Mrs. Mavis Osafo Adu, Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs Directorate; and Dr. Collins Badu Agyemang, Coordinator of Doctoral Schools, UG-PADA.
