College of Health Sciences Hosts Symposium to Advance Breast Cancer Awareness and Research
 
                                
Efforts to promote breast cancer awareness and education took centre stage at a symposium hosted by the College of Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Breast Society of Ghana, Volta Hall and the Legon Ladies Club.
The event, themed “From Genes to Generations: African Genomics Knowledge Gaps and Lessons from Breast Cancer,” explored the genetic and sociological dimensions of breast cancer, identity and empowerment.
Speakers included Dr. Lily Paemka, a Molecular Geneticist, Deputy Director (Research & Entrepreneurship) at the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) and Founder of the Nufu Foundation; Dr. Merri Iddrisu, Lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery and Dr. Rosemond Akpene Hiadzi, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Sociology.
Attendees benefited from free breast screening services by the Nufu Foundation. Special guests included Mr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, CEO of Special Group of Companies and Chairman of the College of Health Sciences Advisory Board, as well as Prof. Alfred Yawson, Provost of the College of Health Sciences.
The symposium highlighted the need for continued awareness, research and advocacy to promote early detection and empower communities in the fight against breast cancer.
