Adu Boahen Memorial Library and Archive Celebrates One Year of Promoting Historical Scholarship and Penmanship

Press Release

Accra, Ghana - May 24, 2024

Exactly one year ago, at the K. A. Busia Quadrangle, the Adu Boahen Memorial Library and Archive was grandly opened to the public with the support of the Adu Boahen Foundation. This was done to honor the legacy of Emeritus Prof. Albert Adu Boahen, a renowned Ghanaian historian, academic and statesman. Being the first Head of the Department of History and based on his great interest in the promotion of historical studies, he bequeathed the total content of his personal library to the department in his last Will and Testament. The Adu Boahen Collection was received in the History Department in 2016 being the 10th anniversary of his passing. Today, we celebrate the 18th anniversary of his departure, and the first anniversary of the Adu Boahen Memorial Library & Archive (ABMLA), the iconic institution dedicated to promoting historical scholarship and penmanship.

In the past year, the ABMLA has made significant strides; however, it is still on course in:

  • Providing a conducive research environment for scholars and students,
  • Hosting seminars, exhibitions, and receiving users who are inspired by the holdings of the facility’
  • Establishing a rare book collection and archival repository,
  • Supporting the development of historical writing and research skills.

The Adu Boahen Memorial Library and Archive is a fitting tribute to Prof. Boahen's life and work. His commitment to historical scholarship and service to humanity continues, to inspire a new generation of scholars, writers, and leaders. This institution ensures that his legacy endures as we foster a culture of intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and excellence.
