1,270 UG Students awarded Scholarships

The University of Ghana, with support from the UG Students Representative Council, corporate and religious institutions as well as individual donors, has granted scholarships to 1,270 financially challenged students.

Facilitated by the Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO), this demonstrates the University’s commitment to the welfare of students with financial constraints.

Delivering remarks at the scholarship awards ceremony held at the Great Hall, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Gordon Awandare, underscored the significance of the event, highlighting its dual purpose of supporting deserving students and acknowledging the generous donors whose contributions made the ceremony possible.

He called to mind the University's core values of providing equal opportunities to every student, regardless of their background or physical and mental state.

“As part of the University's commitment to inclusivity, various organisations and philanthropists were mobilised to support students in need.” Prof. Awandare mentioned.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA) also revealed that this year's scholarship beneficiaries had increased to an impressive 1,270, as compared to previous years. He took the opportunity to encourage the recipients to work hard and excel academically while imploring them to justify the sacrifices made by those who supported them.

Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, the Registrar of the University, during the ceremony, provided details about the various donors. She took a moment to acknowledge the establishment of new scholarships in the current academic year, demonstrating the ongoing commitment to expanding financial support for students.

Scholarship award letters were presented to the recipients by Ms. Selina Torrion Saaka, the Head of SFAO.

Following the successful presentation of the certificates of award, Mr. Kofi Kakraba-Afful, representing the Legon Interdenominational Church, spoke on behalf of the donors. He expressed excitement at the support the Church has been able to render to the University over the past years and announced their intention to elevate LIC scholarships from partial to full support. He encouraged the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity and, in the future, contribute back to the University community.

The President of the Student Representative Council (UGSRC), Frank Tsikata, extended gratitude to the donors and recognised their significant role in shaping the success of the students.
