The course highlights the major trends in the history and development of languages in Ghana. It looks at the missionary factor in the development of Ghanaian languages. It traces literacy issues from the colonial era to the present day. Issues about mediums of instruction and the study of these languages in schools and universities will be considered. Other topics to be covered include orthography, standardization and language use in the media, judiciary, politics and religion.
