UG Welcomes Mr. Michael Opare Atuah as 10th Registrar
The University has officially welcomed Mr. Michael Opare Atuah to office as its 10th Registrar, ushering in a new chapter of administrative leadership as the University advances the implementation of its 2024-2029 Strategic Plan.
The swearing-in and installation ceremony was presided over by the Chancellor, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse and attended by members of the University Council, Senior Management, former University officials, staff and members of Mr. Opare Atuah’s immediate family.
Ushering the new Registrar into office, the Chancellor described the occasion as “a moment of continuity in the life of the University of Ghana,” where the University gives thanks for dedicated service while entrusting new leadership with the responsibility of advancing the institution’s mission.
Charging Mr. Opare Atuah to uphold the values, statutes and traditions of the University, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse reminded him that the Office of Registrar lies at the heart of the University's governance and administration. She urged him to serve as both a custodian of the University’s governance systems and an agent of institutional progress, guided by integrity, wisdom, professionalism and a spirit of service.
Mrs. Chinery-Hesse further encouraged him to promote efficiency, accountability and prudent management while supporting the successful implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan.
The Chancellor also paid tribute to the immediate past Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, commending her distinguished service, diligence and invaluable contributions to strengthening the University's administrative and professional systems.
In brief remarks during the handing-over ceremony, the immediate past Registrar expressed gratitude to the University community for the support she received throughout her tenure.
Mrs. Agyei-Mensah thanked Council, Management, staff and colleagues for their collaboration over the years and encouraged them to extend the same goodwill and cooperation to her successor. She also assured Mr. Opare Atuah of her continued support and wished him every success as he assumes office.
Welcoming the new Registrar on behalf of Senior Management, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, described the Office of the Registrar as central to the University's governance architecture and expressed confidence in Mr. Opare Atuah’s ability to provide the administrative leadership needed to support the University’s strategic ambitions.
She also acknowledged the exemplary service of Mrs. Agyei-Mensah, noting that she had fortified the foundation upon which her successor could build.
In his acceptance address, Mr. Opare Atuah described his appointment as both a privilege and a solemn responsibility. He pledged to build an administration that is innovative, responsive, people-centred and fit for the future, while strengthening governance, enhancing operational efficiency and improving service delivery across the University.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the University's vision of achieving global impact through innovative research, teaching and learning using a technology-driven and people-centred approach. To realise this vision, he identified four priority areas that will guide his administration: administrative excellence and enhanced governance; effective people management and leadership; stronger collaboration across the University and greater use of technology and data to improve efficiency, accountability and decision-making.
The Registrar further called on members of the University community to embrace innovation, continuous improvement and the University’s core values of Integrity, Commitment, Respect and Loyalty as the institution pursues its strategic priorities.
Mr. Michael Opare Atuah succeeds Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah as the University’s 10th Registrar. The University community congratulates him on his appointment and wishes him every success as he begins this important chapter of service.
