UG Secures Major Erasmus+ Partnership in German-African Project to Transform Career Development and Startup Education Across Africa and Europe

The University of Ghana has secured a major international partnership under the Erasmus+ programme through its participation in the German-African Project 2026–2028 on Careers and Startup Education in the University System, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming career development, entrepreneurship training and intercultural learning across Africa and Europe.

The project is led by the University of Münster in Germany and brings together six universities across Africa and Europe, including Ashesi University (Ghana), the University of Ghana, United States International University-Africa (Kenya), Kepler College (Rwanda) and the American University in Cairo (Egypt). It is designed to strengthen collaboration between Career Services, Entrepreneurship Centres and Innovation Units within higher education institutions.

At the heart of the initiative is a shared goal to equip students with the skills, exposure and international experience needed to thrive in global labour markets and rapidly evolving entrepreneurial ecosystems. The project places strong emphasis on practical learning, intercultural exchange and innovation-driven education that connects universities to real-world opportunities.

Through structured exchanges, students and staff will gain insights into academic and professional environments across Africa and Europe, while also exploring startup development pathways and labour market dynamics in different socio-economic contexts. This is expected to enhance their adaptability, creativity and readiness for global careers and entrepreneurship.

The project’s objectives include promoting mutual learning and exchange of expertise among partner institutions, strengthening careers education and startup support systems, and expanding access to practical and intercultural learning opportunities for students. It also seeks to deepen collaboration among university-based innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems across the participating countries.

Key activities will include staff mobility programmes, institutional exchange visits, online seminars, case study workshops and joint knowledge-sharing sessions on career development and entrepreneurship. The initiative will also feature face-to-face training sessions hosted both in African universities and at the University of Münster, as well as advisory support on internships, job placement, startup development and labour market engagement.

In addition, the project will support research into country-specific market opportunities for student-led startups, helping to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry demands.

The University of Ghana’s involvement is being coordinated through the Careers and Counselling Services Directorate and the Innovation Unit of the Research and Innovation Directorate. The University’s participation builds on its growing reputation in student career development, entrepreneurship support and innovation ecosystem advancement.

This major collaboration is expected to significantly enhance the University’s efforts to improve graduate employability, promote innovation and position students to compete effectively in a globalised world of work and enterprise.
