UG Advances Strategic Priority on Resource Mobilisation with Staff Training

To equip University officials with the skills to effectively mobilise resources and manage budgets, the University of Ghana has organised a training programme for staff and faculty across its colleges, schools and units.

The two-day programme, organised by the Inter-Collegiate Implementation Committee in collaboration with the Institutional Advancement Directorate and the Finance Directorate, forms part of efforts to support the implementation of the University's strategic priorities, particularly, Resource Mobilisation and Stewardship.

Opening the session, Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, on behalf of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, encouraged participants to use the training as an opportunity to explore innovative ways of generating resources and managing budgets in an increasingly challenging financial environment.

“This programme encourages us to think beyond traditional funding sources and explore innovative, sustainable and collaborative approaches that will enable us to do more with the limited resources available,” she stated.

Speaking at the session, the Director of the Institutional Advancement Directorate, Prof. Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah, stressed that fundraising should focus on creating value, building partnerships and demonstrating impact rather than simply seeking financial support.

He highlighted opportunities such as executive education, consultancy services, corporate partnerships and research collaborations as potential sources of revenue for departments and units.

Prof Abekah-Nkrumah also underscored the importance of accountability and prudent management of resources, urging University leaders to ensure value for money and transparency in the use of funds.

Deputy Director of Finance in charge of Management Accounting and Payroll (MAP), Mr. Kwasi Odame in a presentation on budgeting and resource allocation, emphasised the need to align budgets with the University's strategic plan and objectives and use resources efficiently.

He also highlighted some of the financial challenges confronting the University, particularly rising operational costs. He noted that utility expenses, especially electricity and water, continue to consume a significant portion of internally generated funds, thereby limiting the resources available for academic and developmental activities.

His presentation further encouraged participants to prioritise efficiency, equity and strategic impact when allocating resources within their units. He urged all academic units to actively participate in the annual budgeting process by providing realistic revenue projections and expenditure plans that reflect their operational needs and strategic objectives.

This programme aligns with the University’s strategic priorities of investing in staff and faculty development as well as strengthening resource mobilisation and stewardship. It is designed to equip participants with practical skills in resource mobilisation, budgeting and financial management in support of the University’s overall goals.
