ADB Pledges Support for UG’s Student Laptop Initiative and Agricultural Research Centres

The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) has pledged its support for the University of Ghana’s flagship One Student One Laptop initiative and the Hotspot Comfort Zone project, reinforcing its commitment to education and student empowerment.

The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to the University led by ADB’s Managing Director, Mr. Edward Ato Sarpong. The visit aimed at deepening collaboration between the two institutions and exploring areas of mutual interest.

As part of the engagement, ADB also expressed its intention to invest in some of the University’s key agricultural research centres. These include the Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre (FOHCREC) in Kade, the Soil and Irrigation Research Centre (SIREC) in Kpong and the Livestock and Poultry Research Centre (LIPREC) in Nungua. These centres, which fall under the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, play a crucial role in research and innovation to support Ghana’s agricultural development.

Welcoming the delegation, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, expressed appreciation for ADB’s pledges and ongoing interest in strengthening ties with the University. She noted that the partnership aligns with the University’s five Strategic Priorities, particularly those focused on enhancing the student experience, promoting impactful research and fostering engagement and partnerships.

Professor Amfo also highlighted the potential to leverage the University’s Internship Policy to create opportunities for students to gain industry experience with ADB. According to her, such practical exposure will complement students’ academic training and prepare them for the world of work.

The visit reflects a shared vision between the University and ADB to drive national development through strategic investments in education, research and youth empowerment.
