Course Description

Students will do a presentation of their progress report made in their research work; this will include literature review, methodology design, presentation of fieldwork report, preliminary findings and/or their final thesis report. In all each student will do at least three presentations in the Department, which will be assessed by faculty members. The presentations will be assessed for 3 credits.

Course Description

The course aims to expose students to on-going research in educational leadership and management. Students will present their research proposal for selected topics of study. Students are expected to identify a unique area of research interest, identify relevant literature on the selected topic, and choose an appropriate methodology to utilize in their research. Students will be assigned to supervisors to support the research process. Students will present their proposals to faculty of the Department of Educational Studies and Leadership using appropriate media.

This course will provide the platform for students to:

  • share their views on perspectives of leadership with their peers and supervisors
  • receive feedback on their research and use this to improve their research skills
  • develop confidence in themselves and share their work with the view to enhancing the quality of their work
EDSL 624 PRACTICE-BASED ENQUIRY

Course Description

This course will involve active critical consideration of participating in an educational enquiry in relation to professional context mapping and workplace learning. These processes will be achieved through partnership with an established educational institution, purposeful mentorship and guidance and a process of engaging in an action research project relevant to the candidate’s educational context. Students will be assessed on a reflective paper utilising evidence from their field experience.

  • observe ways in which the various theoretical perspectives in leadership are put into practice
  • identify and compare leadership styles and their influence on productivity
  • demonstrate understanding of the relevance of organizational charts in educational institutions
EDSL 622 CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION

Course Description

The course is designed to assist students in developing those skills essential for curriculum restructuring, planning, and implementation at the basic and senior high schools levels. Curriculum development, assessment, and instruction are considered with respect to relevant theory, research, and practice. Emphasis is placed on the role of responsible leadership in assuring that these processes function effectively. Analysis of existing curricular from different disciplines and different contexts form an integral part of this course.

EDSL 618 HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN EDUCATION

Course Description

This course seeks to provide educational leaders and managers as well as human resource practitioners with quality theoretical and practical understanding of human resource management (HRM) in education. Main topics to be explored include human resource planning and job design, recruitment and selection processes, induction and retention of staff, staff training and development, and occupational health and safety.

EDSL 617 SPECIAL TOPIC

Course Description

This course will require students to select a topic of interest identified within any educational leadership and management context. The topic must be approved by the Department before a supervisor will be assigned to guide the student in the writing of the special topic through directed reading of current topical issues in education. The original research problem must be clearly addressed and could be theoretical, policy-oriented, or methodological.

This course will provide students with the opportunity to:

  • study relevant aspects of leadership, that interest them most, in detail
  • research into specific areas of educational leadership with the view to gaining more understanding in those areas
  • contribute to knowledge in educational research
EDSL 616 GENDER AND LEADERSHIP

Course Description

This course presents an overview of the historical impact women have endured in leadership roles in organisations, comparing and contrasting the male and female roles and challenges women face in attaining and successfully embodying leadership roles. Topics to be examined are, theories and definition of leadership in different contexts; gender differences in leadership; leadership styles; social, political and structural barriers to leadership for women; gender mainstreaming, and gender-sensitive training skills.

EDSL 615 HIGHER EDUCATION MANAGEMENT

The role of managers and leaders to steer the affairs of their institutions to effectively and efficiently satiate the needs of their manifold stakeholders is imperative. Institutions of higher learning are constantly being demanded to be responsive to the needs of society and the economy. This course offers students an opportunity to study about the management of the dynamic and constantly pressured sector of higher education. Topics to be explored include, Quality Assurance, Financing, Strategic Planning, Nature of Higher Education and Private Higher Education.

EDSL 614 ECONOMICS OF EDUCATION

Course Description

This course uses economics to examine the goals of education in Ghana. The course explores the theoretical and empirical methods used in modern economic analyses of educational policy issues including the demand for and returns to schooling, the impact of resources on student schooling outcomes, education and economic growth, school accountability, student incentives and the equity and efficiency of school funding. Some specific topics include human capital theory, education production, peer effects, externalities, and public and private schools debate.

EDSL 613 THE PRACTICE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

The course explores pedagogical approaches to the preparation of teachers in Ghana and other West African countries. It explores the professional identity of teachers and the factors, which shape their professional practice. Topics include instructional processes, assessment for learning, organizational structures, delivery systems for curriculum, inquiry and reflective strategies and student learning strategies in diverse teacher education contexts.

The course focuses on discussing the alignment of education at the global level to development in view of the increasing emphasis on education as vital to development. The challenges various education systems in the world grapple within the quest to fulfilling developmental goals are explored. More so, it delves into roles and efforts of national governments, supranational governments, multilateral organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector relative to the educational milieu as try to achieve global educational goals in order to alleviate poverty.

There are many political, sociological and economic factors that historically are reasons for the lack of sustainability of school initiatives and reforms. The course examines the challenges of building, managing and sustaining an enduring, successful educational institution and strategies of renewing the validity of an existing one in diverse contexts. It covers topics such as vision, mission, and strategy for improving schools, innovation and management within educational settings; staff culture in and out of classroom; teachers performance monitoring, observation and feedbacks for continuous professional development.

EDSL 609 LEADING AND MANAGING CHANGE IN EDUCATION

Course Description

This course explores the models of, and approaches to organizational change and enhance students’ understanding of how organizations really work. It examines the leadership skills needed to initiate and respond to change. Causes of educational change, the complexities of change and factors that hamper effective management of change are also be examined. Also, styles of leadership needed to effectively manage different phases of change in different educational settings are explored. Topics such as, why change in schools, causes of educational change, why people resist change, why some changes do not lead to change, etc. are treated in great detail.

EDSL 608 INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

Course Description

This course conceptualizes inclusive education as a broad range of groups vulnerable to marginalization, exclusion, and low achievement. The purpose of this course is to develop foundational skills for setting up an inclusive programme that meets the needs of students with disabilities in general education settings through policy, research, and practice. Topics to be explored include students with special needs education, gender, disability, types and approaches of integration, and challenges associated with inclusive education.

  • describe universal design for learning to improve academic engagement
  • create inclusive environments in the mainstream education system

EDSL 607 EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISION

Course Description

This course examines the practices and their nuances to management and supervision in educational institutions as well as contextualizing them in the Ghanaian milieu. The trajectory and evolution of practices in the midst of past and present educational reforms are also examined. Students are introduced to the roles actors and their complex and overlapping relationships in the management and supervision of educational institution in Ghana.

EDSL 606 EDUCATIONAL LAW AND ETHICS

Course Description

This course explores the relationship between law, ethics and current issues in basic and secondary education. It is designed to provide a basic understanding of some laws and legal concepts relevant to education, the work of educators and other school personnel. It examines the current legal issues related to education and introduces students to legal reasoning and analysis. It also examines ethical issues with the work of educators and school personnel. The course covers topics like understanding educational law, curriculum and instructional issues, supervision and student discipline, torts, teacher rights and responsibility, administrator due process, and harassment in employment.

EDSL 605 RESEARCH METHODSIN EDUCATION

Course Description

This course is designed to help students gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to conduct quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research. Major topics include epistemological and theoretical foundations in educational research, literature review, research designs (case study, survey, concurrent etc.), data collection (interviews, questionnaire etc.), sampling techniques (purposive, simple random etc.), data analysis (thematic, descriptive statistics etc.) and ethical considerations in educational research.

  • understand philosophical foundations of research methods in education.
  • identify the design of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches to research and their relevance in educational research.

EDSL 604 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

Course Description

This course is aimed at helping students to develop technologically innovative skills needed to deliver lessons using different learning management systems. It will enhance students’ understanding of how to use different technological tools to bring innovations in their delivery of lessons so as to make the lessons interesting and comprehensible to learners. Topics to be covered in this course include; digital technology, types of learning management systems, e.g. SAKAI, Adobe Connect, MOODLE, etc., technology-assisted learning, teaching and learning with technology, synchronous and asynchronous lesson delivery approaches and communicating with students using technology.

This course introduces students into the theories of leadership and management as they pertain to education. It will expose students to the complex nature of the practice of leadership and management in educational institutions and how to bring improvement into educational institutions with leadership and management principles. Concepts such as types and styles of leadership; individual, distributed and shared leadership; critical friendship; leadership for learning will be examined. It will adopt a critical perspective, exploring new post-heroic conceptions of leadership and management from, and socially co-constructed perspectives that will enable students meet the educational challenges of 21st century.

Topics discussed in this course include: policy making, strategic planning in education, planning functions, factors that shape the political and policy contexts of policy making and major constraints to educational planning in Ghana.

Educational institutions across the globe are confronted with scarce financial resources. It is therefore imperative for prospective educational leaders and managers to have a perfect understanding of the dynamics of education finance to ensure optimum utilization of the scarce financial resources at their disposal. This course exposes students to the foundational concepts and principles of financial management in educational institutions. The course explores topics including financial management in education, sources of educational finance, budgeting and financial analysis and the legal environment for financial administration in Ghana.

  • determine the criteria for ensuring effective management of finance in schools.
