Brief History

The Department of Educational Studies and Leadership was established in 2014 with the recognition of the National Accreditation Board, now part of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), a year later after it fulfilled the requirements. In 2016, after its flagship programmes, the Master of Arts/Master of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Management was accredited, it commenced running it (the sandwich mode) with a cohort of about 160 students, who graduated in 2017.

Objectives

Leading and promoting optimal learning is the key challenge facing educational institutions, educational leaders, advisers, policy makers and governments. The Department of Educational Studies and Leadership, through it programmes, offers students an opportunity to think through educational leadership and management themes and develop their understanding of the theories and key issues pertaining to educational leadership and management and how they impact on teachers’ professional practice. It provides a relevant platform that will enable students at all levels within the educational settings to critically engage with key issues related to educational leadership and management.  Currently in Ghana, it is commonplace for educational practitioners to rise into leadership positions without the necessary academic training in leadership and management. This department seeks to formalize the very necessary training that these practitioners need in instructional practice and relevant leadership opportunities. In addition, the training it offers exposes students to new technological advances in the management of teaching and learning.
