NEWS GHANA reports on the Confucius Institute recruitment fair

【News Ghana】Graduates with Chinese language proficiency favored by Chinese firms in Ghana

Graduates with Chinese language proficiency are more likely to get a job in a Chinese-funded company in Ghana, according to Chu Beijuan, director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana.

In a job fair hosted by the institute and Chinese firm Sunda International on Tuesday, Chu said this trend is creating more job opportunities for the university’s Chinese majors and those who know the language well.

“The prospective placements will enhance the understanding and friendship between Chinese and Ghanaians in their working relations. These prospective jobs will also boost the localization of Chinese enterprises,” Chu said.

Ethel Amoo Bartie, a human resource manager with Sunda, told Xinhua it was necessary to recruit graduates with Chinese language background to bridge the communication gap in the workplace.

“A lot of the things we work with are communication-based, so if the communication gap is bridged, everything will work well. That is why we are partnering with Confucius Institute to ensure that we have the best students,” she said.

Olivia Asiedua, a junior major in Chinese language and political science at the University of Ghana, told Xinhua that such job fairs enabled her to realize that the Chinese language will give her more options in the job market.

“Studying Chinese here at the university of Ghana is a great opportunity, rescuing many graduates from graduate unemployment. So, my being here to study the Chinese language is an essential thing,” said Asiedua, adding that the institute was doing a great job by helping the students get jobs and internship opportunities in the real world of employment.

During the job fair, the institute also announced the establishment of an internship base with Sunda to allow more students to practice their skills in an actual workplace.
