MPhil Admission Requirements

Admission onto the MPhil programme follows two pathways, each with specific entry criteria as detailed below:

  • Direct intake:

This is a two-year programme. The first year is for course work while the second is for thesis research. Applicants must have a good first degree, at a minimum of second class lower, in a related field of study (e.g. Media Studies, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or cognate fields in the humanities and social sciences) from an accredited university. Applicants with third class may be considered for admission based on work experience and other qualifications. Applicants will be required to undergo all admission processes before selection.

  • Top up:

This is a one year programme in which candidates undertake minimal course work and conduct independent research culminating into a Thesis.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (MA or MSc) or equivalent with a GPA of at least 3.0 (B+) in the same field of study. The degree must have been obtained within a period no more than five years. Applicants will be adjudged capable by an admissions committee after undergoing all admission processes.

On the basis of a candidate’s performance in the Department’s MA in Communication Studies programme, the head of a department, in consultation with the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee, may recommend to the Board of Graduate Studies that the candidate proceed to register for an MPhil degree. Such a student must obtain an average of B+ (or GPA of 3.5) from the first semester examination in order to be eligible for upgrading. In addition, consideration will be given to their performance in certain courses (e.g. Communication Research Methods and Communication Theories) as well as their general aptitude for independent research.
