Overview

The Forensic Science programme is jointly offered by the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology. It is designed primarily, but not exclusively, for practitioners and prospective practitioners in forensic science and related fields. The programme aims to equip students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and competencies required for professional practice in forensic science. It provides a strong foundation in the scientific principles underlying forensic investigations, with emphasis on evidence analysis and interpretation, practical laboratory experience, and the effective communication of scientific findings within legal and criminal justice contexts. The programme also develops students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills, enabling them to address current and emerging challenges in forensic science, particularly within the Ghanaian context. Graduates will be prepared for career opportunities in law enforcement, government institutions, forensic and research laboratories, and private organizations, including roles in forensic science, DNA analysis, crime and data analysis, analytical chemistry, forensic casework, and laboratory management. The programme also provides a strong foundation for further postgraduate education and research, including PhD studies in forensic science and related disciplines.
