Since its founding in 1962, the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Ghana has evolved significantly, adapting its academic and research focus to meet global scientific trends. It supports the University's goal of becoming a leader in the Life Sciences by driving high-impact research and training through the Faculty of Science.
The Department's core areas — Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Molecular Biology — explore life at the molecular and cellular levels, providing critical insights into how biological systems function. With strong links to the Biosciences and Physical Sciences, Biochemistry bridges disciplines such as Genetics, Immunology, Pharmacology and Engineering, making it central to biotechnology and biomedical innovation.

Administrative Leadership
Assoc. Prof. Theresa Manful Gwira serves as Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, leading its mission of excellence in education and scientific inquiry. She holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Heidelberg and is recognised for her work on animal African trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis.
